What?

Judo, Taekwondo and Karate are sports originated in Asia. Badminton and Table Tennis are a lot more popular in Asia. Long distance running in Athletics is all about African nations, and sprint running is all about the Caribbean. Then we have Rugby, which was won by a small nation from Oceania in 2016. Beach Volleyball and Skateboarding are pretty much dominated by the US and Brazil.

It's time for you to realize that there are clear attempts for global integration at the Summer Olympics, but zero effort when it comes to the Winter Olympics.

I said "come" (as in orginate from), nothing about the popularity of these sports.

But, yes, I forgot about the three asian martial arts. There is a nice pattern about them as there were all included to make the home nation shine (Japan x2 and Korea x1), not so much to reach global integration per se (even, if is as became an arguement to save TWD's ass recently).

I don't see a clear patern for global integration here, but a reward for both nations to have became credible business partners.

Well, you somewhat contradicted your own criticism in the previous sentence.

As for ice sports, if you look at the US for example quite a few of their skating athletes come from warm climates. The best American Ice Hockey player is from Arizona, they've had Olympic gold medalists in speed skating come out of Florida, figure skaters come from all over, some of the best slopestyle athletes in the world grew up skiing on plastic "snow"... It's more of a cultural (if ice hockey was as popular in Brazil as it is in warm weather places like Arizona, Texas and Florida then Brazil would eventually build the infrastructure for it and good players would naturally emerge) and resource problem than a "Brazil can't ever be competitive in winter sports because of the climate" problem.

You can't be seriously comparing the challenges faced by US athletes to the ones faced by brazilian athletes, as if I can travel to another state and have all the facilities needed to train, etc. You talk about how this is a "cultural" problem, but how can Brazil (or any other tropical country) create a culture of winter sports and general interest if they're so hard to practice? Even if we had some ice rinks and other facilities (not snow, of course, because you know...), you can't simply create a top level athlete from day to night - unless we buy them, which is not the right way to go.

I'm not against the Winter Olympics, but in one way or the other, the climate HAS great influence in the results - just take a good look at the nations who will win a medal next month. The point here is that the Winter Olympics can't never be compared to the Summer version regarding reach. That doesn't mean it isn't fun or that they must be cancelled.

South America has mountains and snow and if they wanted they could improve and challenge in the FIS sports. But the truth is they are not that interested, or have traditions in winter sports. Nothing to do with being excluded from the north countries.

Same with ice sports. If they could build many halls for basketball, volleyball, fight sports, they could as well build a few skating rings. But they don't, because there would be hardly any people to want to use it (i reckon, can't be fully sure of course). And that's ok, those countries don't have the culture for winter sports. It's not the faulth of the northern countries that many others don't participate, they just don't want to and not because there are forcefully excluded.

Yes, because is very easy to ask to the government: "could you please give us millions of dollars to build these ice facilities of sports nobody has ever heard from and that will cost additional millions to mantain?".

I don't blame the countries who have tradition in the Winter Olympics, they're in their own right, but the idea that "summer" nations don't participate in a higher level simply because "they don't want" is a little too much.

No, I didn't. I brought a nuance. Please don't think I'm idiot enough to contractid myself in the same post.

"I don't see a clear patern for global integration even it has became an arguement to save one sport's ass recently" is a sentence that makes perfect sense. An nuance that may not be that strong anyway (see wrestling exclusion for instance).

It's not a critisicim neither, more a matter of fact.

No one is denying that the winter olympics are much less global than the summer olympics (I've said so a couple of pages ago), but I'd argue that it doesn't have much to do with willingness, but very much with opportunism.Which is not the same thing.

@vinipereira No one is denying that the climate has a great influence on winter olympics results neither. But that it can be bypassed to and extent and that the winter sports culture can be cultivated out of nothing (see Monaco and bobseilg as some kind of an extreme exemple). Do it, don't do it., it's really up to you guys. I personnaly don't care one way or the other.

I guess you love your windmills in Brazil.

  • 3 weeks later...

I guess I'm a bit late to the party but here is what my perfect Olympic program would look like:

Alpine Skiing [11]

  • Slalom (m/w)
  • Giant Slalom (m/w)
  • Super-G (m/w)
  • Downhill (m/w)
  • Combined (m/w)
  • Team Event (mixed)

I would change the Team Event to its old format where you had a Super-G run first and then a Slalom run. Of every nation you had one man/woman who skied the Super-G, one who skied the Slalom and one who had to ski both. So both teams needed good male and female athletes and they needed speed skiers, slalom skiers and allrounders. It wasn't that exciting to watch but currently one team only needs one good male slalom skier and one good female slalom skier and they can win gold. That's ridiculously unfair.

Biathlon [11]

  • Sprint (m/w)
  • Pursuit (m/w)
  • Individual (m/w)
  • Mass Start (m/w)
  • Team Relay (m/w/mixed)
  • single mixed relay

I like the inclusion of a mixed event but 3 relays are too much. Therefore I'd prefer to see a single mixed relay to have a different kind of race while still including a mixed event

Bobsleigh [4]

  • Two-man/woman (m/w)
  • Four-man (m/w)

+1

Cross-Country Skiing [12]

  • 15/10km Freestyle (m/w)
  • 30/15km Skiathlon (m/w)
  • 50/30km Classical (m/w)
  • 4x10/5km Relay (m/w)
  • Individual Sprint (m/w)
  • Team Sprint (m/w)

Curling [2]

  • Tournament (m/w)
  • Mixed Doubles (mixed)

-1

Figure Skating [5]

  • Singles (m/w)
  • Pairs (mixed)
  • Ice Dancing (mixed)
  • Team Event (mixed)

Freestyle Skiing [10]

  • Aerials (m/w)
  • Moguls (m/w)
  • Halfpipe (m/w)
  • Slopestyle (m/w)
  • Ski Cross (m/w)

Ice Hockey [2]

  • Tournament (m/w)

Luge [4]

  • Singles (m/w)
  • Doubles (open)
  • Team Relay (mixed)

Nordic Combined [5]

  • Individual Normal Hill/7.5km (m) (one jump)
  • Sprint Normal Hill/7.5km (w)
  • Mass start Normal Hill/10km (m) (two jumps)
  • Individual Large Hill/15km (m) (two jumps)
  • Team Large Hill/4x5km Relay (m)

I think it's time for a women's Nordic combined event. The competition probably wouldn't be great but I don't like that women are still completely excluded from a sport.

The rest is a combination of old Nordic Combined disciplines. I don't like that the Normal and large hill events are almost identical so I want the return of the old format of a sprint (with one jump) and an individual race (with two jumps). Moreover I'd like to see the return of mass start events. They were usually not as exciting as the other races but it was the only discipline where it's worth watching both the ski jumping and the cross country skiing part, and again I simply like variety.

+2

Short Track Speed Skating [8]

  • 500m (m/w)
  • 1000m (m/w)
  • 1500m (m/w)
  • 5000m/3000m Relay (m/w)

Skeleton [2]

  • Singles (m/w)

Ski Jumping [5]

  • Normal Hill (m/w)
  • Mixed Team Normal Hill
  • Large Hill (m)
  • Large Hill Team (m)

+1

Snowboarding [12]

  • Halfpipe (m/w)
  • Slopestyle (m/w)
  • Big Air (m/w)
  • Parallel Giant Slalom (m/w)
  • Parallel Slalom (m/w)
  • Snowboard Cross (m/w)

I'm really angry at the IOC for cutting the Parallel Slalom especially because the reasoning is so stupid. "It's too difficult to differentiate between the disciplines" Problem solved, one of the just isn't a parallel event anymore. Since I prefer the dynamic of parallel slaloms I decided to make the Giant Slalom the Individual event (with two runs like in alpine skiing btw) and bring back the old parallel slalom.

  • 5000m (m/w)
  • 10,000m (m)
  • Mass Start (m/w)
  • Team Pursuit (m/w)

Cyclocross [2]

  • Race (m/w)

Natural Track Luge [2]

  • Individual (m/w)

    • I think the biggest problem for Australian football is how big the roster size is.   Rugby League Nines might be a more realistic "out there" selection.
    • If lacrosse can be selected then I don't see why Australian rules football can't be selected if they get Olympic sport recognition. Australia will obviously dominate, but there's enough other nations to make a tournament.   As for netball, a women's only event is still much more likely to be accepted than a men's only event. Australia and the netball federation can spin it as bringing equality to the number of men's and women's events (while obviously ignoring that there will be more women at the Olympics).
    • The NFL are pushing had to develop flag football in Australia in hopes of getting it included in 2032. I hope they fail tbh.   Single gender sports fail the gender equality requirement so netball is out unless they can rapidly fix their gender problem. World Netball not so long ago was refusing utterly to sanction men's international netball or even support the growth of men's netball so they kind of sabotaged themselves and are only changing courses out of self interest because Brisbane was awarded the Olympics.   It doesn't even make sense to propose Aussie rules given how poor the participation is outside of Australia.
    • - Great Britain Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (4) - The qualification system is a bit confusing, but from what I gather the team is Guaranteed 2 quotas (one for each gender), and then more are given for rankings. I can only see 1 female qualifying, but the men's team is a bit stronger, and could improve with some juniors coming through. I would say a baseline of 3, with a max of 5, 6 if things really improve.  Cross Country Skiing  (3) - The men's team came 11th in the world cup last year, and with some good results could move up to top 10 which would give 3 quotas, The women's team is non existant.  Ski Jumping  (0) - Nope Nordic Combined  (0) - Nope Freestyle Skiing  (6) - Based on last year rankings, the athletes are ranked: M Moguls (26/30), M Ski Cross (26/32), M Halfpipe (33/25), M Slopestyle (39+40/30) W Moguls (23+42/30), W Halfpipe (3/25), W Big Air (5/30), W Slopestyle (19+22/30)  Barring Injury , thats 2 quotas on the women's side, and I would predict 4 more, with a max team of 7 or 8. Snowboarding  (2) - W Halfpipe (34/25) is the only unknown quota, as both Charlotte Bankes and Mia Brookes should qualify easily. Huw Nightlingale may get a spot for the Mixed Team snowboard cross but I don't know how it works.
