Karate at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

Recommended Posts

Right, question: I just watched Aghayev vs Busa, and at some point Aghayev gets punched in the face quite strongly by Busa and he goes down. However, instead of some sort of score for Busa, it's some sort of penalty for Aghayev. Why does one get penalized (by something else than a score) for being punched in the face? Isn't that, you know, an extra punch in the face?

Aghayev was penalized for simulation, for faking the hit was harder than it actually looked (if you notice, the ref before awarding any penalty of that kind, goes to watch carefully the face of the athlete hit by a punch or a kick...if there's no physical damage or you're not groggy, the ref should do what was done in this case -unfortunately it doesn't always happen...they normally give the penalty to the hitter, which is a mistake because hits are allowed*, they just have to be "under control" in order not to get the opponent injured, like it happened today in the final match of the men's +75kg class)...

*this version of Karate is also named "semi-contact", in opposition to other formats being "full-contact", like my favourite version, Kyokushinkai...

Getting DQ'ed because you kicked too hard....I entirely understand my feelings about this final come from a complete lack of understanding of how competitive karate works, but I really can't find it sad that karate will be gone from the Olympics after this...sort of feels like you fight for gold in "Holding Back Fighting".

Edit: Reading the previous two pages helped, at least :p  And most importantly it's good to see the Iranian sort of ok after all.

It was absolutely the correct decision by rule, but it is indeed baffling for a layperson.

Luckily we've got people here who are not laypeople, that helps a lot in understanding the decision.

I mean, it's not like the Ukrainian federation, or any single federation for that matter, has the power to strip her of her world and European championships medals I hope (not for her sake, but because that would be a super weird precedent)
