Cross-Country Skiing at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022

Easily the most surprising medal for Germany. Huge respect for the german coach. He knew that their only medal chances would be the relays and they probably focused on those events in training. Too bad that the women's 30 km race will be in freestyle, otherwise Hennig might have won another medal.

Yay, we get the much-desired Top 20 result. :cheer: Best ever in cross-country. Also our first participation in any team event at the Winter Olympics since Torino.

Very pleased for Maeki. Perfect strategy with Niskanen pushing the pace and Joni saving his effort for the key leg.

Really happy for the German gold, always have rooted for their skiers, glad to see this resurrection from them.

Hopefully it’s good for the sport. Public Interest definitely dropped away Europe-wide this last decade.

The only previous team participation from Torino was in the men's team sprint, when the guys placed 22nd in the final analysis (24 teams were entered).

Interestingly, :BLR Belarus did not start that day too. Are they boycotting WOG team events with Croatia?

Despite public catfighting with Monika Skinder, Izabela Marcisz has agreed to take part in the Team Sprint. How generous!

Tajner - the boss of Polish Ski Federation - had talked to Marcisz 40 minutes long and conviced her to start. Knowing how authoritarian Polish Federations are, I do not want to know any details of it.

9th place so close to TOP8, but probably no extra money for them.

Frida Karlsson is not selected to go the 30km. Instead the swedish four will be Andersson, Kalla, Ribom and it will be interesting to see Sundling in a distance race!

Nilsson won bronze 2018 over 30K, so it is a possibility

Pretty crazy that the 3 same nations won the medals in all women's biathlon/cross-country team events and that Norway wasn't one of those nations:

Cross-country skiing relay: Russia - Germany - Sweden

Cross-country skiing team sprint: Germany - Sweden - Russia

Biathlon relay: Sweden - Russia - Germany

All those nations have the exact same medal tally. Who would have thought that Germany would win 3 more medals than Norway in those events?

Edit: Also pretty surprising that 3 female cross-country skiers (Sundling, Dahlqvist, Nepryayeva) will end the games with at least as many medals as Johaug. If Johaug doesn't win a medal in her last race (unlikely), she will end the olympics with the same number of medals as Victoria Carl and Katharina Hennig.

    • Some notable  retirements:   Elisavet Pesiridou (athletics - 100m hurdles) - She announced her retirement on her 34th birthday. She competed in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She narrowly missed Paris 2024 despite being in good form, the rest of he field seemed to get stronger and her ranking was a bit lower even though she was quite consistent. She struggled with injuries in 2025.   Fani Tzeli (taekwondo) - She was 7th in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Still, she is only 24 yo and seemed to be rising up again after winning bronze at the European Championships so it is a bit surprising.   Aikaterini Divari (sailing) - She competed in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Only 25 yo.   AJ Ginnis (alpine skiing) - Despite winning a silver at the World Championships he never got to compete at the Winter Olympics as he was always unfortunately injured. A shame as he is by far our best winter athlete ever. Only 31 yo, and I have a feeling he might come back in 2030 based on his last interview...
