Big scandal in Dutch speedskating, yay :d

Jillert Anema, as coach of the French team, asked the Dutch team to go easy in the 1st round of the team pursuit in Sochi, because for financial reasons a big loss for the French would be bad. In exchange, the French would let the Dutch win, so the result would be a small Dutch win: win for the Dutch, and only a small loss (and so no financial trouble) for the French.

This news broke today, and it's all they talk about now. One more reason to hope Jorrit Bergsma (Anema's athlete) won't win :p

About this: Bergsma has now accused Kramer of being the one to 'leak' this information to the media, and at a moment right before the 10k, to throw Bergsma off his focus. We have an old-fashioned speed skating bitchfight on our hands, ready to dominate our media :woohoo:

@heywoodu Any idea what Kramer will do with today's diploma?

Emergency toilet paper? Hang it above his bed, as a reminder to himself: "Never again"?

Another gold for the Netherlands... opss he is naturalized Canadian.

Technically Ted-Jan Bloemen isn't naturalized, he was entitled to citizenship by ancestry... because his dad happened to be born in Canada... because his grandparents happened to work in Canada while his dad was born.

But, ya know, he's not naturalized, just a Canadian citizen by luck :p

Excited for tomorrow! This will be one of the most open 5km in a while, with Sablikova not being as good as she has been in the last decade, but still being one of the favorites.

Thanks, didn't know Giotto trained in Canada too. Does he train with Bloemen? :mumble:

he was talking about Bloemen...Ghiotto does train in Italy (with Tumulero, Giovannini and the rest of our team...Marrit Leenstra included )...

and of course nobody expected him to be a medal contender after realizing that our team basically is totally out of shape (except for Tumulero...and Leenstra)...

but before the Games, yes, many people in Italy thought he could be right on Bergsma and Bloemen's shoulders (since he skated 12.53 on the slow track in Stavanger in december, a 12.43/12.45 -at least- was reasonably within his capability)...

unfortunately, his Games have been an epic fail (but he's young and relatively new to the sport, so he can still improve a lot in the next seasons), but Tumulero finally did make up for the rest of the team (waiting for Lollobrigida's Mass Start race, of course)...

Didn't know that, never considered him a medal contender, but of course i also thought that Kramer would medal ...

I think all 3 medallists will be gone in 2022, so he might win gold then, of course unless this event gets scratched.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?

    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
