That surprise for me, even after not successfull season last year. Especially when he was on photos from Kenya shared by Lewandowski recently...

I guess when you get to a certain age even a quite trivial injury can make you think you’re at the end.

  • 2 weeks later...

Definitely an end of an era for :NZL sport. Dame Valerie Adams has retired. Multiple world champion and 4 olympic medals 2 of them gold. 3 weeks after the great Hamish Bond an 8x wch and winner of 3 olympic gold medals announced his retirement. That's a hefty bit experience and expertise gone but was expected. Thank you to them both for giving us many memories.

Wow, I wonder if this has to do with Ieva's ban? Milda didn't want to switch to single sculls? Donata is already 32 so I wouldn't be surprised if she stopped too. She already seemed to have stopped and only came back when Ieva got banned.

Donata was fully ready to continue for an another Olympic cycle, especially since it was only three years this time.

Milda announced her retirement right there on the stage, Donata didn't even know that was going to happen.

Really lost a lot of respect for Milda, I believe Donata is going to try her luck in the single-sculls and after that probably retirement in 2024.

I know this is off-topic, but when does Ieva's ban end?

van der Poel really just showed up, broke two world records and won two Olympic gold medals to make a point, then just dropped the mic and peaced out. Legend.

“When you’re a professional athlete in a sport that sucks as much as speed skating sucks, you’ve got to find a way to make it suck a little less,” van der Poel said at the Olympics. “I did 20 ultras, 1,000 skydives, I served in the army for a year, I do a lot of parties. I went snowboarding a lot. I went ski mountaineering. I biked the whole of Sweden. I made it adventurous, because I knew there was a time when I would lock myself up, enduring it. I had to build up a mountain of motivation.”

TBH I wouldn't be shocked if he showed up again in like November of 2025 in monstrously good form.

He performed well, but got bored and left for a few years, and then got back and performed even better and now it's on to the next goal :p

    • Your most ever at a Summer Olympics was 14 golds, 20 would be a big increase even with the new sports  I’d say out of them, only costal rowing has a chance of gold, and flag football a medal if they can qualify.    Wouldn’t breaking the 14 from 1984 be a good for Italy? I’d say so. They can’t all convert after all, and you’ve been hovering in the 8-13 range for a while (although Italy has gotten better the past two)   For Canada at least, 11+ golds would be amazing, anything else would be a bonus. We won 9 in Tokyo which is our highest total ever.
    • Personally, I'm really looking forward to Japan's performance in the World Cup. From the current situation, Japan has a very distinctive playing style. They have strong tactical ideas whether facing European teams or South American teams. However, Japan has never won a knockout match in the World Cup. As someone who has been following Asian football for a long time, I really admire Japanese football.
    • Italy didn't qualify again.    Well, now all that's left is for Germany to be eliminated again in the group stage and we'll guarantee another 4 years of "Brazil, the only five-time champion in history, nobody is bigger than Brazil, respect our history and blah blah" that we use on the internet.
    • Failing to qualify for the World Cup once can be put down to bad luck or other reasons, but missing out three times in a row must be due to an all-round gap. I feel sorry for Italy.
    • Italians can only blame themselves. Serie A has been run by foreigners more than any other Top 5 domestic league. There are zero global stars not named Donnarumma. This is the weakest Italian crop of players I can remember and it's not even close.   As for Poland, our defense did a terrible job. Unlike the much-maligned Michniewicz & Probierz who often parked the bus, Urban completely run out of BS luck since errors proved too numerous & too costly.
    • Okay, but defeats to Macedonia and Bosnia are unacceptable. Above all, let Italians start playing in Italian clubs... Look at Milan or Como...  Another think is the old and ugly stadiums - Türkiye or Poland currently have much better infrastructure than we do.
    • Problem is, that the current funding system of Italian sports - since 2018- relies on football paying the lion's share through taxes (around 70% of the sum that is redistributed). So the rest is strong until it can draw money from football, which in turn makes football weaker and less able to generate money and then who knows.
    • I prefer our current strong sport at all and weak football than a lucky promotion and defeat at the World Cup, as in 2010 or 2014. Sinner, Brignone, or Antonelli are worth 100 times more than losers like Bastoni.
    • if tonight's humiliation means 20+ gold and 50+ total medals in 2 years time in LA, I'll take it 1 billion times    and I'd never change the emotions of the 2 Olympic weeks in Milan (and the other sites) with just another average soccer world cup
    • Strong teams advance from the groups, especially since there are now 48 teams playing at the World Cup, not 32. It's Italy's fault that they lost 0-3 and 1-4 to Norway.
