Golden three-peat in slalom for Shiffrin

2Q==

American Mikaela Shiffrin won the FIS Alpine World Ski Championship slalom gold medal for the third straight time after earning an astonishing 1.64-second victory ahead of Swiss sensation Wendy Holdener. Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter took home the bronze medal 0.11 seconds behind Holdener.

It was Shiffrin’s second medal of these championships here in St. Moritz and the fourth total of her career. She also took the slalom gold in Schladming 2013 and in Vail/Beaver Creek 2015. She was absolutely unstoppable on the second run as she built her lead to more than a second by the third interval, and continued to cruise from there.

"I didn't see my time until I got all the way through and I knew I had a good run, but I didn't know it was that good until I saw the time," said Shiffrin. "Three medals is great, but today is really special today for me because I finally skied this the way I wanted to and that's what means a lot to me today."

Holdener was the hero for the Swiss fans, earning the silver medal, her second of these World Championships after she took gold in the alpine combined last week.

“I made a few small mistakes in the second run, so when I heard the speaker say I had the lead I was surprised,” said Holdener. “There was no beating Mikaela today, so I’m really happy with the silver medal and these entire World Championships.”

Hansdotter now has three medals in the last three World Championship appearances, with one silver and two bronzes.

"It means a lot to me today. I had a lot of pressure so it feels nice to have the medal," said Hansdotter "I've been skiing well the last few years and to get a medal at the last three World Championships is great."

Shiffrin led the field after the first run 0.38 seconds ahead of Holdener and 0.59 seconds ahead of Slovakia’s Veronika Velez-Zuzulova. Velez-Zuzulova straddled a gate, ending her hopes for her first individual gold, but she still goes home with a silver medal from the nations team event.

After Lara Gut’s season-ending knee injury last week, today’s World Championship gold medal is likely not the only major title the American will win as she has a clear command in the race for the Overall World Cup title.

Tomorrow the 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships will come to a close with the 11th medal event, the men’s slalom. The first run is at 9:45 CET and the second run will kick off at 13:00.

    • I wonder if there are any monuments to their first leader, who died in 2006, or has the latter taken over everything?
    • now the leader is not that one, but his son (you’ll see him in one of the photos I shared, in the tv. His face is everywhere as it happens in any country with cult of the leader).   and yes the story is true, in Ashgabat only white, golden and some other colour (grey?) cars are allowed in the city. Just like every building is white.   And it’s funny you mention the talibans, because Turkmenistan has an Afghanistan representation/consulate in their country, and one of the days when we were eating lunch in a mall at Mary city, the Turkmen guide was called by the restaurant waiter and then came to us and said “ok so don’t worry, but a taliban delegation is coming here to eat lunch so don’t take pictures and behave discreetly when they enter”.   One of those wtf moments of our trip haha
    • I agree, but having 2 (in 2016) or 4 weight categories wont help the noble cause. Why UWW limited this WC to only non olympic wrestlers? Why only 4 weights?  And so on. I saw some great bouts but they were overshadowed by these facts. At least IMO.

    • https://www.news18.com/news/auto/turkmenistan-president-bans-all-colored-cars-from-capital-only-white-cars-allowed-1632963.html   It`s crazy. In my opinion, there was better there when they were under the USSR, because there were no such absurdities.
    • A few years ago I read a crazy story about this president-dictator from Turkmenistan, who banning white or dark cars from being imported to Turkmenistan (I don't remember which ones). This is a country of absurdities. After the fall of the USSR, a dictator- Turkmenbascha, who ruled there for many years and died about 15 years ago and his health minister replaced him and has ruled ever since. Both are madmen. Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan are more civilized and don't have such weirdos in power. It's probably only the Taliban that are more radical.

    • 200m / 400m runner Jodie Williams.   Had a great record at the Age Group level but never quite got the big solo wins as an adult.  Relay bronze in Paris was her finest moment.   https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/articles/ckgl7gwvj8go
    • This is the World Senior Championship final, not a high school match   and this kid is under 20 (won the world U20 this year) and destroyed everybody (including  Olympic Champ Uguev and World Champ Arujau) in his senior debut.   injuries and lack of motivation play a big role, but if this kid stays healthy and motivated, I don't think anybody beats him in next 10 years. he is lightening fast, his gut-wrench is deadly and he can throw at will. that's the complete package.   not sure what Olympic weight he picks. Japan has the current Olympic Champion in both 57kg and 65kg.   I think it's fair to say Japan is currently the best men's freestyle team in the world. (despite being weak in heavier weights)
    • Sport is not only about the Olympics (which is somehow ruined by the IOC, mixing it with the politics and for this specific sport limiting the number of athletes to just 16 per weight)   it was a great competition (despite having a terrible host) . yep the freestyle competition ended up very badly for our team but it was great pleasure watching Masanosuke Ono and likes of Abdulrashid Sadulaev, Jordan Burroughs, David Taylor and Zavur Uguev.   watching Masanosuke Ono itself makes my day.
