Biathlon IBU World Cup 2020 - 2021

Recommended Posts

First time in history, Lithuanian men will have 4 starting spots in World Cup races.

I'm really hoping we don't blow this and actually qualify to the Olympics as a relay.

Stage number 8 which was scheduled as pre-Olympic World Cup in Beijing is cancelled.

Not a real surprise.  It should be interesting to see how they do having never seen the course in 2022.  Just wondering where you saw this?  I have not seen any official announement.

The IBU Executive Board also discussed the calendar for the upcoming season. It expressed its support for the decision taken by the International Olympic Committee, Beijing 2022 and the Winter Olympic International Federations to replace the international test events for Beijing 2022 with an adapted sports testing programme this upcoming season.

Under the principles of minimising travel and protecting athlete and stakeholder safety, the IBU has already adjusted the World Cup calendar for the first two trimesters of the 2020/2021 season. Together with its organising committees, National Federations and relevant state authorities, the IBU is currently working to adjust the competition calendar for the third trimester (March 2021 World Cups), when the Biathlon World Cup at the Olympic venue was originally planned. The calendar update will be announced in due course.

In order to guarantee the highest possible standards for the Olympic biathletes in 2022, the IBU will now enter into discussions with Beijing 2022, the Chinese Biathlon Association and the IOC to define the details of the adjusted testing of the Olympic biathlon venue in Zhangjiakou. An IBU delegation took part in a venue visit to Zhangjiakou this week and can confirm that preparations are well on track.

Slovakia Team announced for the opening stages.

Since we have only 3 quotas in both genders,

The M Team will be represented by Tomáš Hasilla, Michal Šíma and Šimon Bartko.  (After the retirement of Martin Otčenáš any point this season will be a success)

The W Team will be represented by Paulína Fialková, Ivona Fialková and Henrieta Horvátová. (The 2nd Post-Kuzmina season will be again a sign of hopes of Slovak biathlon fans inserted on the Fialková sisters shoulders, mainly on the older one "Paja" nowadays clear SVK biathlon number 1)

In Relays the teams will be supplemented by Matej Baloga and Veronika Machyniaková.

For Lithuania it's going to be:

MEN: Vytautas Strolia, Karol Dombrovski, Linas Banys, Maksim Fomin

WOMEN: Natalija Kočergina, Gabrielė Leščinskaitė

There's a chance that Tomas Kaukėnas might have caught the virus, but if he hasn't, then he'll replace Fomin.

Kaukėnas has decided to return to his old coach Ilmars Bricis and he is training with a couple of other Latvians as well as Baiba Bendika, whom are all at risk of missing out Kontiolahti.

Rastorgujevs is not from that training group as far as I know.

And just as I wrote it, yep Tomas Kaukėnas has covid. It's projected that he'll probably come back in Hochfilzen, but if his tests show negative next week, he could be allowed back in the second stage of Kontiolahti.

Baiba Bendika probably with the same situation, so she is going to be late to the Olympic Qualification train.
