Huge scandal in the first day of the Russian Freestyle Wrestling Championship 2016 in Yakustsk city.

During the quarterfinal in the weight category up to 57 kg double world champion Victor Lebedev (who represents Yakutsk) beat the champion of Europe among juniors (U-23) from Dagestan region of Russia Ismail Musukayev (4-3). Instead all the specialists including the head of the Russian wrestling federation admitted that wrong decisions of the judges influenced the final result. After the end of the match Musukayev pushed the leader of the Yakut national team, which is said to rival the same. Even riot police were sent in to stop the fight.

The competition was suspended for 2 hours and there was the meeting.

According to the President of Federation of wrestling of Russia Mikhail Mamiashvili, in the battle were made gross technical errors. "The meeting viewed the video, and all the experts

agreed that 4:2 was to defeat Ismail Musukayev . Under the existing rules of the fight the judges ' decision is irrevocable and the winner of the match is Viktor Lebedev. We can not change. But we need to be as objective as possible and be lucky at the Olympic games strongest athlete. The objective of this championship of Russia is the selection for the Olympic games".

Mamiashvili also confirmed that the decision to provide Musukaev the right to participate further in the selection process regardless of who will win this championship of Russia in category to 57 kg.

It should be noted that in protest to this decision all wrestlers from Dagestan (several olympic and world champions) suspended their participation at the championshiop

Lebedev has decided (or someone higher up did :p ) that he won't go to the Olympics because he feels that guy from Dagestan with his completely idiotic "fans"/coach/etc should have won the fight.

  • 4 weeks later...

In the mid-May, when the first wild cards were announced, they said that remaining wild cards will be announced at a "later date"... Some federations really need to realize that Olympics are starting in one month (that's right UWW, IJF, FINA, WA, AIBA).

The deadline for all entries is July 18th so they have lots of time ;)

I imagine (hope) that they have at least told the federations about the wild cards.

I think UWW still has some problems with wrestlers they disqualified so quick , some of those wrestlers who "qualified" through qualifiers and later got disqualified by UWW are participating in international competition ! which means they are not banned.apparently they had less than enough meldonium to be banned and they turned to CAS to overturn UWW's decision. in this case UWW will probably give them those "wild cards"

according to some Russian websites, Magomedmurad Gadzhiev (Poland) is cleared to wrestle in Rio ! we have to wait for the official announcement but as far as I know consider it a done thing.

just for info, Gadzhiev won his quota in European qualifier but got disqualified for meldonium.

now the question is, he will go to Rio in place of who ? Savid Safaryan (who got his spot after the ban) ? or he will take one of those re-allocation quotas won be the host Brazil.

This news is also in few Polish medias, our NOC and Polish Wrestling Federation gets confirmation from UWW that Gadzhiev is allowed to compete in Rio.

and apparently even Ukraine will take back the quota at 65kg

and probably other disqualified wrestlers will get it back as well, terrible terrible decision by UWW , they could wait a bit before taking a decison

If disqualified wrestlers are getting back their quotas, does that mean that the nations who got reallocated quotas are losing them?

It is really unprofessional of UWW. They should have finished dope tests before disqualification and reallocations.

    • I remember when I was a child and I was on holiday with my parents in Tunisia, I think in 1999? We were on a trip to the desert near the border with Algeria. The guide said something like that: Algeria is a few minutes from here but we won't go there because there is a war going on there and it's not safe.
    • Netanyahu is bad but unfortunately Hamas helps him maintain power. Every attack they make is a reinforcement of Netanyahu's rhetoric about the country's security, etc. In the fall of 2023, Netanyahu was already losing support and then suddenly a big Hamas attack on a festival near the Gaza Strip. Coincidence? It wouldn`t surprise me at all if Netanyahu knew about the plan for this attack but did nothing so that he would then have the tools to maintain his power. I also remember Ariel Sharon - he was probably even more radical than Netanyahu but he had a brain hemorrhage and fell into a coma.
    • Ah yes, post-colonial bickering never gets too old. Let me grab my popcorn!   Netanyahu is on a personal revenge mission to avenge his brother's death for his entire political life and people still act like they're surprised by his actions
    • MId-1962.  Almost all the Jews were driven out in a few days, even though they had been living there since Classical, pre-Muslim times.   Perhaps our friend could give us details of of any current Algerian plans to welcome them back, restore their property, guarantee their safety etc etc?
    • In what year did Algeria free itself from French influence? 1960, exactly?
    • Or better, perhaps he'd like to tell us what happened to the 140,000 Jews who were living in Algeria in 1960, as against the 200 who live there now?
    • There are still many people of Jewish origin in Central and Eastern Europe who have nothing to do with the state of Israel. What ties does Zelensky have to the state of Israel? Apart from he waś there as president of Ukraine and speaking in the Knesset? Nothing. In the power circles in Moscow there were/are many people of Jewish origin and what about that? A large part of the power apparatus of the USSR was based on Jews, especially in the years shortly after WWII.   Instead of constantly writing about Jews, would be better to tell me which country Algeria has better diplomatic relations with: Tunisia or Egypt?
    • Handy guide for the perplexed.
    • I`m a bit disappointed with the starts of the Italian team. I was counting on progress from last year. And here it looks like Bagnis is still very uneven. In Cortina there will be 3 competitions with medals to win and it would be a shame not to use our track to win 1-2 medals. The same goes for luge.
    • On the other hand Errani's serve doesn't make Paolini's task any easier... But Paolini is in a such good shape here, though, that I hope she wins her first title in the old Fed Cup. For Errani, it will be 4: 2009, 2010, 2013. So far, Roberta Vinci has 4 titles with Italy.
