Asian Winter Games 2017

Better than a Pan American Winter Games assuming Canada and US send their best teams. Though I guess a number of nations could win bronze in team events.

They should have let Australia and New Zealand be eligible for medals, at least it would have added more competition.

I guess having some non-Olympic sports could have brought more interest to the smaller winter nations, like in 2011 when Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia grabbed a couple of medals in bandy and ski-orienteering.

Iran was disqualified in the ice hockey por ineligible players. Didn't fulfill 3 year residency rules...

to be accurate Iran was "disqualified" for not having enough players ! OCA knew the situation about those players and still gave them their ID cards for the event but later some countries apparently protested that , since Ice Hockey doesn't exist in Iran, that left Iran with only 9 eligible players ! (those are in fact inline hockey players)

they are still in Sapporo playing according to the schedule but only their results count as friendlies ! with only 9 inline hockey players they lost 8-1 to Macau :d

They can only play with 9 players? In a sport like ice hockey that's impossible. That's like asking a single person to run a relay.

thats just what i was thinking about when I read it :d can not understand how they managed to finish the match and not die  oh man, the players must be totally wrung out already after the first match  even in the prehistoric era of the hockey they was some 13-14 players playing

and these are not even Ice Hockey players :d

btw apparently they are going to barrow some players from the opposite team :p they are not serious friendlies. just having fun.

I don't know about IIHF eligibility rules but OCA rules are clear about 3 years residency. this is probably Iranian officials fault. they probably didn't even know such rule exist since Iran rarely use such players in any sport.

back in Incheon 2014, OCA didn't let UAE uses those Moldavian judokas they had for the same reason.

About the eligibility rules

Spoiler

IIHF Eligibility

To play in the IIHF Tournament, World Championship, the Olympic ice hockey tournament and the qualifications to these competitions, players must fulfill the following qualification requirements:

  • Each player must be under the jurisdiction of an IIHF member national association.
  • Each player must be a citizen of the country he represents.

Acquiring a new national eligibility (The ‘two-year’ case)
When a player has changed his citizenship or has acquired another citizenship and wants to participate for the first time in an IIHF competition representing his new country he must:

  • Prove that he has participated for at least two consecutive hockey seasons and 16 consecutive months (480 days) in the national competitions of his new country after his 10th birthday during which period he has neither transferred to another country nor played ice hockey within any other country. Female players need to have participated on a consistent basis for at least one hockey season and have been member of the new national association for at least 12 consecutive months during that period.
  • Have an international transfer card (ITC) that shows the transfer to the national association of his new country and which was approved and dated at least 16 months (480 days) before the start of the IIHF competition in which he wishes to participate.

Change of national eligibility (The ‘four-year’ case)
A player, who has previously participated in IIHF competition, can switch national eligibility (but only once in a player's life) if:

  • He is a citizen of the new country of his choice
  • He has participated for at least four consecutive years (1460 days) in the national competitions of his new country, during which period he has neither transferred to another country nor played ice hockey within any other country and has not played for his previous country in an IIHF competition during this four year period.
  • He has an international transfer card (ITC) that shows the transfer to the national association of his new country and which was approved and dated at least four years before the start of the IIHF competition in which he wishes to participate.

Probably yes, but the mistake is even more strange since they are apparently inline hockey players and inline hockey is also under IIHF :d

Thats cool, great to hear that the opponents are prepared to help your team, we must keep in mind that at first it´s just a sport and it´s for fun. let the guys will enjoy the rest of the "tournament" and earn some good moments and who know maybe also result(s). Good luck :)
