I'm intrigued as to how far ahead USA is in front of China (since we're normally neck and neck).  Is that because in some sports (weightlifting, for instance) this year, they didn't send their A-team?

Good question. Maybe we will get some analysis straight from China?  @Vic Liu - what are your thoughts on it - if you want to share them with us?

 

Because my early thoughts are - this is a post-olympic season so don’t get used to these results too much, they often don’t show the real strength of many NOCs. Many top athletes - not only from China - skipped the WCH this year or they didn’t build their best form. The 2027 season simulation will be much more significant

2025 WTA Finals results would be nice. But there was only one pair where both athletes were from the same NOC, ehh... (because Russians - Andreeva and Shnaider -  are excluded). That would be gold for ITA then (Errani and Paolini). But what with minor medals?

No good idea here. But i think 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles tournament would suit the most because we will have the same format in LA olympics. So that's another tennis gold for ITALY (Errani and Vavassori). Russians are excluded. Pairs with athletes from different NOCs are excluded, too (that means poor Iga won't get her medal here, she played with Casper Ruud in NY). And then - silver would go to USA (Collins and Harrison) and bronze would go to USA as well (Townsend and Shelton).

 

EDIT: or rather bronze for Serbia (Danilovic and Djokovic) if we have one pair per NOC only, like in Paris.

Skateboarding has some tournaments that you could consider world-class:

 

For Street it's easier because there's a world circuit, and the final stage, the SLS Super Crown (December 6-7) in São Paulo, Brazil, will take place next month.

 

For Park, I can give you two options: there's the 2025 World Cup in Italy (I don't recommend using this for street). Or you can use the STU Pro Tour 2025, which is a kind of Brazilian circuit, but many high-level athletes usually participate (they even had a stage in Sweden this year). The next stage will be in Rio de Janeiro in 3 days.

FIH Hockey World Cup is simulation event but the tournament is generally held once in 4 years with the next scheduled in 2026 and the previous one was held in 2023.

Otherwise there were no relavant tournaments in 2025
You can go with rankings as they are a decent indicator of top teams

In Cricket, there are three main formats played internationally - Test, 50 over One-Day Internationals (ODI), Twenty 20 or T20. The Olympics shall be played in T20 format which also the most widespread, short and thrilling format.
T20 World Cup is relevant simulation event which happens every 2 years. The previous one occurred in 2024 and the next one is in 2026.
Again rankings are a decent indicator

So far, i have tried to avoid using rankings to determine winners as much as i could. I always tried to find one competition in year 2025 for each olympic event. I have used rankings to determine ties or decide who should be there instead of some BLRUS athletes.

 

But it looks like that in W and M hockey and W and M cricket it's not possible to do anything serious this year without using the rankings. So thank you for your advice. The early draft would look like that:

      Shades of 1998 with  and  in the same group but this time it's really a terrible draw for the Thistles. I recall Brazil and Scotland played in the same group in 1974 and 1990 too so that's quite a high probabiliy rate.

      I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
