The only explanation I can think of for Braathen's massive lead — aside from him being very good, of course — is that sometimes #1 has a big extra grip even compared to #2, and it's not about the snow deteriorating.

 

Sometimes there is a layer of softer, slightly wetter snow on the surface, which provides extra grip. #1 takes advantage of it, skis it away and #2 suddenly has way less grip.
