I would prefer the 12 teams tournament in both genders, and give the almost 80/90 quotas to a lot of sports. For example, 32 could go to 4 more teams in each gender in basket 3x3. Then, the 12 team qualification i will do it like this:

Host quota

gold medal of the previous olympic (-1 reduction to the confederation of the gold medal team)

3 to europe

1 oceania

2 south america

1 north america and caribe

1 africa

1 asia

1 playoff africa-asia

1 playoff of loser of africa-asia, 4th europe, 3th southamerica and 2nd north and caribe

and for the women probably the same changing south and north america quotas

The thing is, counting football players in the athlete quota doesn't even really make any sense. They don't stay in the village, and they bring in more revenue than they cost.

Like I get why people dislike the men's football tournament, but it would be an absolutely braindead move to remove it.

Wouldn't 8 be better then, if 16 is too much (which, especially for the men, it is)? Then you can at least have a decent format, for which you need 4, 8, 16 or 32 teams (well, or 64 or 128 :p).

Obviously we need a 48 team Olympic tournament, since FIFA has discovered this is the optimal number.

Pretty much. As much as some people hate the fact the men's tournament is u23, the bottom line is it still makes the IOC a lot of money. Likely the most out of any sport.

a nice story from Cyprus.

a popular Russian football blogger Evgeniy Savin established a football club Krasava (named after his blog, it means something like Cool fellow) in 2021. The next year Savin made an anti-war report, was declared wanted and had to flee. He moved team to Cyprus and it started playing in the second division. In the third season they promoted to the top Cyprus division. Not every day a blogger's team gets such promotion, especially in a foreign country

Bring back the 1991 borders

The FIFA Appeal Committee decided in March 2025 that Pachuca and Club León breached the Regulations for the FIFA World Cup Club 2025 (Art. 10.1) concerning multiple club ownership. Due to this breach, the FIFA Secretary General decided to remove Club León from the competition.

CAS decision to reject the appeals of CF Pachuca, Club León and Asociación Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (for replace one of two teams).

FIFA has decided that the team to be admitted as a replacement for Club León will be determined through a play-off match between:

Los Angeles FC :USA and Club América :MEX

The winners will automatically qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and will take the position of Club León in Group D

Women’s World Cup to expand to 48 teams in 2031

More lopsided games coming in 2031, if you ask me.

Unnecessary move. 32 teams works better and is fine as is. 48 teams is both too many and leads to an uninteresting group stage with so many teams qualifying.

Yep...come on, how difficult is it to understand that one needs 16, 32 or (too much of course) 64 teams for a decent format? 48 doesn't work without intrinsically unfair things like "best ranked third place".

But, money.
