My friend, I don't want to be a partypooper, but I'm wondering why does Guatemala, a country with pretty big population, have such a poor Olympic record?

I think it is the same as with many developing poor countries with big population: the access to sport facilities, nutrition, corruption (benefits to some elites) and poor organization managment has make a toll on the success. It was until the late 1990s and early 2000s that things starte to change, first at the Central American and Caribbean Games and then Pan American Games, where Guatemala started winning more medals. things are changing and hopefully the trend will continue.

To be out of the list of countries benefited by Universality quotas, qualifying directly about 70% to 80% of total athletes is the changes that :GUA is seeing.

I will add that Football has been the most popular sport in the country for decades, and the budget, facilities and promotion of it dominates over individual sports. So, that situation also influence in what sports kids and teenagers practice.

:FRA France are having an exceptional Olympics so far. If they had gotten the expected 2-3 gold in judo in the passed weights, they would be leading the medal table.

Day 5 Update

Right now, at the end of Day 5, we have the following gold medals for the USA, China, and France:

:USA 5 gold medals (-6 compared to the same period at the 2020 Games)

:CHN 9 gold medals (-3 compared to the same period at the 2020 Games)

:FRA 8 gold medals (+5 compared to the same period at the 2020 Games)

This would imply the following total at the end of the 2024 Games:

:CHN China - 35 gold medals

:USA USA - 33 gold medals

:FRA France - 15 gold medals

Yeah, it's so unexpected, like you said we have 0 Gold medal in judo, which is supposed to be our best sport (with fencing). :hyper:

But we could clearly thanks Leon Marchand for this.

For :CHN China the difference is that in Tokyo, weightlifting was at the start of the program, while now it's at the end. That at least 4 certain Golds there.

The :USA US on the other hand are indeed underperforming in swimming (and in some other sports i would reckon) when it comes to Golds. On the other hand, their athletics team is much stronger now, than in Tokyo, so the falling behind in swimming can be compensated in athletics. It will come down on how will they do in the smaller sports and if they can get some surprise winners.

For :FRA France i'm still saying it's 20+ golds.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
    • Oh I’m not done yet, unfortunately. From the names that could be back but are still injured   Courtney Hoffos Mikael Kingsbury (should be back before the Olympics) Connor Howe (he returned, but nowhere close to his best so his injury is still giving him issues) Connor Bedard Meryeta O’Dine Megan Oldham
    • Italy also has its own list, although of course not every injury is as terribile  in terms of medal losses. In winter sports have unfortunately much more injuries than summer sports. In the summer only: cycling, volleyball and football.     - Brignone: will return in January, - Tabanelli: will return for the Olympics, - Bassino: season over, - Marta Rossetti: season over, - Lara Malsinier: season over.
    • TNT staff expect they will offer it at a price similar to what they offering the Winter Olympics for rather than the full TNT price.   But equally the main coverage is apparently going to be very different to what they do for the Olympics (Which is less pundits and studio chat than the BBC) with speculation it might be based on NBC’s Olympic coverage with tons of human interest etc.
    • India Sherret (ski cross)   Another name to the ever-growing list of injuries for the Canadian team… used to be excited for the Olympics, now not so much…
    • Voted  Thank you for extending the deadline and allowing me to vote once my exams are over. @OlympicIRL
