39 medals for :POL at the combined Champs. Only the four rich "old West" countries won more :p

And lets remember that we underperformed in rowing, with just one winning medal + trilion 4th and 5th places.

Great to see a lot of nations finding success on the continental level in Olympic events. 31 countries with a gold medal across both championships is a pretty neat statistic.

It’ll be interesting to see how this event compares to the 2023 European Games. EBU will serve as a the host broadcaster for both. Athletics, Canoeing, Cycling, Sports Climbing, Table Tennis, and Triathlon will be a part of both. Aquatics might be a part of the 2023 European Games, though I’ve yet to see anything finalized. There will be Olympic qualification on the line in Poland, but there will also be a handful of sports most people won’t be familiar with. It’ll be interesting to compare the reception from one to the other.

  • 1 year later...

UEC.ch have announced they have agreed with ECM, the company that runs the European Championships event, for the inclusion of cycling, in multiple formats for 2026, 2030, 2034 - the first news we've heard in a year that the 2026 event is even happening. With European Games seemingly well embedded, and having a similar agreement with European athletics for 2027 and 2031, it seems neither of these rivals are going anywhere after all, when both looked in trouble...

And over the weekend, six other sports - Canoeing, Rowing, table tennis, triathlon, sports climbing and volleyball, along with cycling, signed up long term to the European championships concept. Athletics is out for 2026 (or, given Birmingham city Council's woes, is it?), but apparently gymnastics and to a slightly lesser extent aquatics have signalled real interest in taking part in 2026 - but perhaps not with quite the long term commitment of the other sports - would not be surprised if gymastics did a cycling and threw all its events together once every four years - like cycling, and unlike swimming and athletics, it works on annual champs, so 1 in 4 is a good trade for them to get the extra eyes.

In any event, apparently they're going to announce 2026 and 2030 hosts at the same time, so the event seems to have stablised. Word is that both the European Games and the european Para Championships have interested bidders too, and there are even rumours of a 'reproachement' between EOC and Euro Champs where in future (post 2026)  they might 'combine' their narratives in certain sports (i.e. Euro championships will provide some direct qualification to Olympics, while also providing main qualifiers to the European Games the following year, which itself provides next tranch of Olympic qualifiers). I have my doubts that will work out, but it's an interesting idea that the two organisations are not quite as much at each others throats as they used to be...

    • Judging always takes two or three minutes in these competitions - longer even for possible medal runs - for reasons above, so just saying DNI is a way of saying it's not worth comparing a fall on the third hit to a fall on the fourth hit since neither are going to affect the overall.
    • Scoring in all these events is a bit strange as they are not judging a pre-defined move to an absolute standard, as happens in diving, gymnastics etc, but are constantly shuffling around trying to score riders relative not only to each other, but to that riders' previous runs earlier in the competition and qualifying.

Habera was also quite famous as Simon Cowell-style judge in the czechoslovak version of American Idol in the previous decade.   The song I picked was and is still a sort of a unofficial anthem of young people, I guess the majority of us knew this feeling about having constantly an empty wallet   but, without further ado, here is the 1989 song Prievan v peňaženke from Team, hope some of you will enjoy it     Lyrics       Lyrics   I guess it takes a special talent To be always running dry with money No use wasting any more words I'm one of those soft-hearted folks Who are always penniless   I'm a faithful friend to every bank But there's still no cash in my wallet Just a ten-penny coin, long time non-valid The sad end of payslip days   My wallet is always empty I lose bank notes by the pound My wallet is always empty I can hear their distant laughter…   There might be a Bermuda triangle in my wallet I can’t win this fight against nature My blood pressure is low and my salary follows suit My pockets are empty like those of a big-beat fan   My wallet is always empty I lose bank notes by the pound My wallet is always empty I can hear their distant laughter…   I'm the ultimate currency expert No success in my wallet Hey, bro ! could you lend me a twenty ? Of course, none of this is official as only the federation can confirm who qualified.

    • That's completely ridiculous, and another reason to get rid of it from Olympics.   But, to be fair, the WDSF Breaking rankings were quite precise during Olympic Qualification. They weren't clear about how the quota would be given, but imo, they find a good way to distribute the points.

    • There will be a little more downtime for multi-sports games fanatics like myself. The ISF has something next month, but the schedule is pretty empty until December (2024) and January (2025).
