1936 is very different in its construction and far less generic than many others...

Some want to take into account the context rather than the motto itself, I'd say that except for Athens all of them are interchangeable, then I don't see why I should consider the political situation :)

¡Amigos para siempre!

This version played by Los Manolos during the closing ceremony is still part of the playlist of many summer parties (verbenas) in Spain:

Having been in Salt Lake in 2002, I'm partial to..

But based on the vote, I'll go with 2004.. "Welcome Home"

Well, there’s two clear favorites. Also clear that most of us aren’t feeling Tokyo’s motto. As I said before, I think it’s because you can’t draw and connection between it and Japan, and it just doesn’t sound good in English. We can also see the Rio’s was a failure too. I honestly forgot that Rio even had a motto. I think 1988 deserves a bit more love, but overall the distribution seems fair in my opinion.

The one from 2004 is the best.

It has the most weight, and that’s important. I actually think 1988 is the “strongest” slogan, and it actually became true for South Korea when we think of the years leading up to the games, and the years following. 2012 is also a good mission statement. 2004 is the best because no one else can make that claim. It also just makes you expect good things, and makes you feel warm and fuzzy about the Olympics. As writer, it’s my favorite.

2004, because it's just perfect. The only other option (apart from 1936) of which I didn't think it was so insanely boring and filled with a complete lack of inspiration was 2016.

Share the spirit, one dream and inspire a celebration that's united by emotion. It could so easily be the motto for every freaking sports event ever. Also for every school trip or every random, generic event with a few people where organizers want to make it seem like they will change the world. Which they won't. At all.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
