Yeah...I have a sneaking suspicion they’re not worried about that...

If CG were cancelled alltogether I bet nobody would notice it's gone. Totally irrelevant event and one of the last relics of the colonial era.

Agreed! Don't know what kind of pride the athletes have competing in this. 2-3 big nations dominating small islands and african nations.

I think more people watch the Commonwealth Games then you realize...

Those smaller nations also get to send many more athletes here than the Olympics. It’s a development event for many of these nations. It also gives the home nations athletes a chance to truly represent their countries. Plus, something like 25 of the CGAs that compete, are ineligible to participate at the Olympics.

I agree at 100%, it's one of the few oddments of the British Empire. CG are just an '800 events :p

I disagree.  The Commonwealths are a big thing for the small African & Carib nations who have intense local rivalries.  Also a source of great pride for the small nations that make up the UK like the Isle of Man, Jersey etc.  Even large nations like India still love the chance to beat up on England at hockey, archery, shooting etc.  And Australia / New Zealand / England is still one of the greatest rivalries in World Sport in many events.

People outside the UK generally do not understand how intense & how alive our little historic internal sporting battles still are, especially in areas where outsiders see absolutely no difference - like small villages only about four miles apart, or neighbouring islands with populations of about 500 each, or two towns whose regional accents differ only by a single vowel sound.

Oh, I can understand how the former colonies absolutely hate England and rightfully so. But I see no point in keeping relics like Commonwealth Games alive.

Let's see if Birmingham doesn't go bankrupt over this next edition

As long as participating nations do, that's all that's needed.

Oh yeah, and some nations wanted to take part in Goodwill Games too! I wonder why isn't that alive anymore?

I notice that everyone who has no time for the Commonwealth Games comes from non Commonwealth countries

The surprising thing is why on earth you have an opinion on something you have nothing to do with at all

Personally I have no interest in European only events but I certainly wouldn't bother telling the world about it

PS I also have no interest in Eurovision which may explain why I have never commented on it

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

    • Off to Milan for the 145th session of the International Olympic Committee. Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. This will be the eighth time the session is held in Italy, the last one being during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.
    • another wave of mega rain is coming in north Africa
    • What is happening in Canada , people leave it  They say life is very expensive , you cant find an appartement , the salary is miserable    is it the multi tax of Trump?
    • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
