As for the handshake issue: it's beyond stupid for fencing to force athlete to shake hands. Even tennis, one of the most high class sports there is, allows players to not shake hands. FIE and the fencing community are full of themselves if they think that this is okay. And not just for the Ukraine-Russia situation. Don't ignore the human element of the sport, you can't force athletes to respect each other.

Completely stupid rule. They should have learned during the pandemic that shaking hands is very unsanitary and can lead to the spread of disease. Also if they want to appear like a gentleman's sport, they should maybe punish the athletes for screaming and jumping around after every hit + i don't really have the impression that many athletes have a lot of respect for the referees (especially if they don't judge in their favor).

The draws are out for tomorrow, these are the potential matches in the Round of 16

Men's foil

:USA v :AUT  ||  :POL v :CAN

:FRA v :HUN  ||  :EGY v :CHN

:JPN v :UKR  ||  :KOR v :GER

:ITA v :BEL  ||  :HKG v :GBR

Women's sabre

:FRA v :KAZ  ||  :JPN v :BUL

:ITA v :UKR  ||  :USA v :CHN

:HUN v :POL  ||  :ESP v :GRE

:KOR v :CAN  ||  :AZE v :GER

I think @phelpswon't be happy about meeting Ukraine in the R16 in women's sabre after what happened with Kharlan. That can be one nasty draw for Italy. We got Poland instead of Ukraine, the team that almost beat us 4 years ago in the R16, Pusztai saved us there with an insane run at the end.

Ok so Kharlan qualified at the OG via special quota at least (it was suggested by our favorite Thomas Bach) :hyper:

I don't agree, in all sports we greet each other, it's a rule of respect, I find it sad that politics take over sport, which must be outside of all that.

it can't because Russians support putin and war in Ukraine. We cannot shake hands to people who financed missiles which killed our nation every motherf.cking day

these athletes have nothing to do with it, it's a bit easy to make this deduction..

Speaking personally, I would refuse a handshake after a match if my opponent hasn’t played by the rules or was verbally abusive to me or my team. I think respect is a mutual effort.

In terms of the actual incident in question, Kharlan did seem to acknowledge her opponent, which everything considered, is actually quite surprising.

I wouldn't be happy in any case, since our girls are normally so afraid to face Kharlan and take insane runs every time

however, I still think our team is much better than :UKR who basically can rely only on their superstar

    • (Quiet gaming, zero social pressure, no calls, no KYC… just peace.) As someone who’s definitely on the introverted side, I’ve always hated anything that feels intrusive — long registrations, support calls, verification uploads, or sites that spam you into interacting. So over the past year, I tested a bunch of crypto casinos specifically to see which ones are introvert-friendly: ✔ no forced KYC ✔ fast payouts (so no long back-and-forth with support) ✔ clean, quiet UI ✔ no pop-ups and no social pressure ✔ easy deposits ✔ minimal interaction needed Below is what actually worked for me. ⭐ My Top Crypto Casinos for Introverts (Real Testing Results) Casino Why It’s Introvert-Friendly Speed Link JackBit Quiet UI, no KYC, instant payouts 7 min 👉 Play at JackBit BetWhale Low-pressure bonuses, simple layout 14 min 👉 Play at BetWhale BitStarz Fast cashouts, no forced conversations 9 min 👉 Play at BitStarz ThunderPick Clean minimalist design 18 min 👉 Play on ThunderPick 7Bit Casino Extremely chill, no notifications 22 min 👉 Play at 7Bit 1. My experience as an introvert: I deposited and withdrew without any human interaction No KYC requests (crypto only) The layout is simple and not socially “loud” Withdrawals landed in under 10 minutes It’s the casino I keep coming back to simply because nothing bothers me.   👉 Play at JackBit (Zero Social Pressure) 2. BetWhale – Best for Quiet Bonus Hunters BetWhale surprised me — their bonuses are generous without requiring chats, emails, or ID checks. Why it works for introverts: Wagering progress updates silently No pushy pop-ups The whole site feels “low-pressure” Support never contacts you unless you message first It’s a very low-interaction platform.   👉 Play at BetWhale (Smooth & Simple) 3. BitStarz – Fast Payouts Means Less Interaction BitStarz is great if you want to deposit, play, withdraw and leave — quick and efficient, no conversations needed. What I like: Withdrawals are some of the fastest online No random KYC prompts if you use crypto Very stable gameplay (no need to contact support) A calm, mature-feeling interface Perfect for players who like things to “just work.”   👉 Play at BitStarz (Quick & Quiet Gaming) 4. ThunderPick – Best for Introverts Who Like Betting Too ThunderPick has one of the smoothest, cleanest interfaces I’ve used. Everything is intuitive and visually quiet — no clutter, no noise. Introvert-friendly perks: Great for casual betting without chat rooms Mobile interface is extremely calm No forced community features You can switch between casino & sports without talking to anyone     👉 Play on ThunderPick (Minimalist Interface) 5. 7Bit – The Chillest, Quietest Crypto Casino 7Bit feels like a casino designed for people who want to be left alone. Why I recommend it: No aggressive marketing No forced KYC unless you use fiat Huge game library with silent browsing Simple cashier with no need for support interactions It’s a very relaxed environment.   👉 Play at 7Bit (Totally Low-Pressure) Final Thoughts — The Introvert’s Casino Shortlist If you want a quiet, private gaming experience without feeling watched, talked to, or pressured: 🏆 Best Overall for Introverts: JackBit 🏆 Best Quiet Bonus Experience: BetWhale 🏆 Fastest Stress-Free Payouts: BitStarz 🏆 Best Minimalist UI: ThunderPick 🏆 Most Chill Game Library: 7Bit
    • It's not a coincidence that a lot of the matches that are earlier in the day are in Atlanta and Houston and Dallas where they have roofs.  And most of the games in the outdoor stadiums are later in the day.
    • The best athletes will all be there anyway – it's easier to get a spot in the top 10-15. Only the great champions were ahead of Gismondi today.
    • They are not "oppressed enough" to be mention here.
    • And remember the Olympic Paradox - it is slightly easier to get a medal at the Olympics than at a World Cup because in the Olympics the numbers of racers from the powerful nations are capped at 4.
    • Jimmy Mariano  basketball. 84 years old.   Member of the Philippine men’s basketball team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Flag bearer for the Philippine delegation at those Games.
    • Franchi had a similarly impressive performance at the 2023 World Championships on the same distance but later she completly missing. I hope that with Gismondi will be different, especially since she was already a great talent in her junior years. The problem in Italy is that for the past 15 years, aside from Pellegrino, there has been a miss of stability in other athletes: there are some booms of excellent form, but later they disappear. I also worry that funding for cross-country skiing will be cut after the Cortina Olympics.
    • The last day was a great success, for first. Secondly, even 20 medals are fewer than the 22 from 2023 and 34 from 2021
