Hi all,

 

I've been around a few months now, and one thing that I find interesting is that this is a place to celebrate sport from all over the world.  We have all kinds of sports--Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, non-Olympic, etc.--and sports that are played in different regions of the world.  We celebrate women and men athletes.

 

Yet interestingly, most all of the users are male here (49 new male users in the last year vs. 9 new female users; 476 non-newbie male users all-time vs. 22 non-newbie female users).  I'm curious as to what you think might cause this difference.

 

I've never considered the Olympics to be something that only appeals to one gender (in fact, I'd say my own mom was more into the Olympics than my dad when I was a kid); however, by simple virtue of it being a sports community, and stereotypically it is guys who are more attracted to sports, perhaps this is the reason?

 

Is it that this community dives deeper, stats, etc., and while the Olympics might appeal to any person on the surface, it's more appealing to guys in general to go into greater depth with sports?

 

(My own wife enjoys sports, and it is she, not I, who played sports in high school, making this a little more curious.)

 

Just an observation I've had.  Nothing wrong with the state of it, but just curious!

Yes, and yes. It is really that simple.

Edit: just to add something, forums generally might be more male oriented than female in comparison with social medias due to anonymity. And also speaking of my demographics, due to earlier internet adoption and exposition to the web of the early 00's male users might be more familiar with forums than social medias.

 

But even if it is. It's marginal. I used to run a twitter account that went deep in some sports-related subjects (history, datas, economics). 99% of my interactions were with males.

I'd say the medium (forum vs. social media) probably doesn't have as much to do with it.  Thinking about other online forums I've been a part of, it wasn't predominantly male or female.  Perhaps it is as simple as sports...but it's just curious since a majority of guys in the US (who do care about sports) don't care so much about the Olympics...so it is interesting when you dive into the subset of people who do care deeply about Olympics, it does seem that that population is predominately male.

I don't know if this is related, but when I was in high school, it was common for boys to get together and discuss soccer for hours. It was a common topic in our daily lives. I imagine it's easier to introduce them to a discussion about sports in general. For women, even if a girl liked a sport, it was difficult to find a group that also liked it, since most girls weren't interested. Well, obviously this should be transferred to the virtual environment.

Just look at women's magazines - fashion, diets, makeup, interior design, gossip but never any articles about sport.
