IOC leader Coventry warns of ‘uncomfortable’ change coming to Olympics programs

I fear they're really going to cut sports from the Summer and put them in the Winter Olympics... I miss Bach:p

Cutting 'old' sports' and disciplines is nothing new. Its been 20 years since wrestling was supposed to be cut from the program and it's still there. Even boxing is still around despite its myriad of issues.

Cutting sports is a shit lot more difficult than the oppposite. I wish her good luck, historically, all IOC presidents so far have a terrible record when it comes to cutting stuff.

Is there really ? Like really it is followed ? (I mean apart the two days before the opening ceremony)

There may be some fresher datas somewhere, but for London 2012 it generates ~25% of the tickets revenues.

like seriously, I consider myself like a total olympic fanatic person, but I never watched a single second of football at the olympics once the opening ceremony started except the gold medal games ofc

They dropped U-21 squads for a reason (after they admitted senior amateurs make no sense). The days of Communist bloc & Brazil amateurs playing the Olympics are over. Alas it gave :POL one of only two OG gold medals in strictly team sports :p

It still makes a lot of money, if it isn't the highest it's up there.

It also helps that the stadiums are located away from the host city so it has less competition with other sports.

Some double digit percentage of all ticket sales at the Summer Olympics is from

Football, and all that for a relatively low cost. And the TV numbers can’t be that bad because when the IOC did its revenue tier list of sports Football was in B (behind only the big usual suspects like Athletics, Aquatics, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Basketball…), and 40% of that ranking was TV ratings.

It makes sense when you think about it though. Football is spread out, so if you live in, say, Lyon or Marseille it’s an easy way to "go to the Olympics" without having to travel.

The less politics part essentially confirms my suspicion that both Belarus and Russia will compete under their own flag in 2028. The Refugee Team may be at risk or at the very least the team will be a lot smaller.

In terms of sport program, I think the plan is to remove nostalgia from the equation. If an event only has 10-20 active nations then maybe it doesn't belong at the Olympics.

Like Cricket.

I wouldn't be surprised if football was the most viewed sport during the Olympics in a good chunk of Africa and Latin America.

Suspect they will be watching to see if the split in football occurs. There is talk a lot of Europe will withdraw from FIFA if Russia comes back.
