I sometimes wonder why Georgia (the country) is happy being called Georgia internationally. Like why they’re happy being confused with a state inside another country…

They even asked Japan to stop calling them with the Russian derived Gurujiya and then the Japanese started calling them Joojia (which is also the same spelling for the US state)

Moldova will stay the Republic of Moldova even if nobody uses that name in a casual conversation. Meanwhile, most people will continue saying Czech Republic at least for another while. Weird. :p

They're just grateful no-one's calling them Bessarabia anymore.

Way ahead here, everyone has been calling it Czechia for decades now. :p

Same here actually - Češka - but in the English language I just can't help but say Czech Republic even though it is both different *and* longer.

Well, I do support the Czechia change since almost every country in the world is officially called "the republic of x" or "the y republic" so it didn't make much sense for everyone to address the czech especifically like that.

However all Turkiye, Qazakstan, Cymru stuff is ridiculous, just accept your english name for international events lol, don't try that hard to be a snowflake.

I’m curious: what would your position is if people started using “Saint Dominic/Santo Domingo” instead of “Dominican Republic/República Dominicana”.

Moreover, would it be too weird to use “Río de la Plata/River Plate” instead of “Argentina”?

Argentina is an adjective that has "evolved" into a noun, there's no problem there. The english used to call it "the argentine" in the XIX century, personally wouldn't care if they kept doing that, it's their language after all.

About RD, if they were simply called "dominicana" it would be easier. But there is already Dominica, so perhaps it would cause more trouble than good for everyone in that case.

in Italy we use to call the Dominican Republic "Santo Domingo", at least when we speak of them. :d

Formally, however, it's always the Dominican Republic also here (Repubblica Dominicana in Italian).

When the Olympics was in Atlanta didn't Georgia get the most applause from the spectators after the USA? ;)

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
