And actually, if we went one rule further, then there is clear ground to DQ Thorpe again for being a professional athlete. Why should a rule about results being final 30 days after the event be applied and not the rule about professional athletes being barred from competing?

 

The 30 day rule takes precedence so it doesn't matter what is discovered after. Welcome to the world of early sports where poorly made rules can let someone expose a loophole. I'm not saying we should be celebrating Thorpe, but he did sneak his way to an Olympic gold medal and based on the 1912 rules it is legitimate.

One point we should make is about the IOC President Avery Brundage, who was powerful in US sport even before he got the job with the IOC.

He was noted to be very discriminatory towards Jews, black people and native Americans and competed against Thorpe at the 1912 Olympics.

 

It's possible Thorpe would have got his medals back  50-70 years ago if Brundage hadn't been in charge.

I hadn’t heard of these trees before. Obviously, the legacy of that particular Olympics is fraught, but this seems like a cool landmark worth protecting.

will officially ask IOC to change its name with immediate effect from Czech Republic to Czechia.

 

The Czech Olympic Committee announced it, the majority of the Czech sport federations approved the proposition during its general assembly. They will ask IOC to immediatelly change the name and also demand that the new abbreviated designation to be used in all international sports competitions and at the Olympics games already from Paris.

 

so no more Czech ripablik folks, from now on only Czechia

Obviously not a member of the IOC, but the Welsh Football Association will ask FIFA that they be known as Cymru and not Wales after the World Cup
