I'm almost sure that Carta already won a gold, i haven't idea when. In 1996 Fagone won the 500m on the Netherland ice meanwhile Vuillermin won the 500m in Beijing 1993. 

Sighel should be the 4th Italian to become World championship in an individual event

no, he's the 4th Italian man to win (at least) 1 individual Gold at the world champs.

 

Fabio Carta in 1999 was the last one.

 

before him, Orazio Fagone (twice) and Mirko Vuillermin also won world gold medals.

That was a rather foolish mistake by Lin indeed, but doesn't really make the final by itself less phenomenal  

 

It's really the month of silly yet sort of dumb mistakes costing world titles it seems, after the Dutch women's team pursuit last week

And the world championships had to be the one event where both Natalia Maliszewska and Diane Sellier has to have their worst peformance in the season
