Wrestling UWW World Championships 2023

Recommended Posts

so here are the quotas for tonight

86: :IRI:USA

125: :IRI:GEO

these guys in repechage will try for the remaining 3 quotas tomorrow

86:

needs one win :UZB:KAZ

needs couple wins at least :AUS:MGL:SMR / :MAR:AUT:BRN

I think it's fair to say that 3 quotas will be between KAZ/UZB/SMR/BRN, only the Mongolian can change that

125:

needs one win :USA:TUR

needs couple wins at least :BLR:PUR:HUN / :CAM:RUS:POL

no chance for PUR and I think BLR will beat Ligeti (HUN) or at least he has a better chance. that CAM wrestler is actually Iranian so it won't be walk in the park. last night I would considered Baran (POL) as favorite but Kurbanov (AIN) was better than my expectation

so I say 3 quotas will be between RUS/BLR/TUR/USA but POL and HUN can change that

Can you do a summary for non-olympic weights  please.

Will be good to know , what to make of the competition in those weights & who will medal in those categories. Thanks!

Ligeti has some tricks up his sleeves and almost gave us a scare when he scored that 4pts against Zare but he is not young and after that Zare easily scored tons of points on him. that guy Khramiankov has couple of wins against our 2nd/3rd tier wrestlers, so I know his potential probably better. of course Ligeti can take the win with one of his nasty throws , winner of that match will finish 5th though but will be one win away from the quota.

you know, always good to have quota on 1st event. For me you will get it. But this guy from Uzbekistan looks so good here.

Next tournaments could be stressuful. This period for your top wrestlers could be more calm than going and prepare for next events before OG.

of course, it's important to win the quota early, because then you can prepare yourself better. but in this specific sport winning the quota doesn't mean the same guy will to the Olympics. they still have to go through our own trial process (even though by wining a medal they will have a huge advantage over the rest)

it's also about matchups and different styles. for example that Uzbek guy was great until the SF but Yazdani handled him quite easily, he usually does that against Russian (and ex-Soviet) wrestlers but he struggled against Amine (SMR) who is American in fact.

anyway it was a good day, 2 quotas, 3 in the final (2 expected 1 surprise ) we are in a race with team USA for the team title and they are leading after the 1st day.

Yazdani-Taylor is probably the most anticipated sporting event here (I mean outside of football) people will get very upset if/when he loses. and unfortunately I can't see him winning. Taylor was just better today

sure

but two of them had their competitions today

61kg

Abbasgazhi Magomedov was the clear favorite before the event and he proved that on the mat too. easily making it to the final dominating everybody including the Ukrainian. (no shake hands after the match and UWW didn't care again) from the other side I was expecting the Kyrgyz guy to qualify but Vito Arujau was great. I think Magomedov will win the final too

70kg

Zain Retherford was the clear favorite IMO and he made it to the final. I believe your guy has a realistic shot for the bronze. I didn't know him before today but like most of your lighter guys he is not giving up easily :d

A.M. Yazdani is a talented wrestler but he lost to almost everybody this year, so him being in the final is surprising. I don't think he will win the final but I hope I'm wrong

and for tomorrow weights

79kg

I think two big favorites are going to meet in the QF and that's Nokhodi (IRN) and Usmanov (RUS/AIN) I believe Usmanov has the upper hand. Nokhodi has a unique style comparing to our other wrestlers, more similar to Russian style.

bottom half looks easier to me, I think Mykhailov (UKR) is the favorite with Gamkrelidze to win the bronze. Mykhailov tried his luck at 86kg mostly this year, I don't know how he is doing one weight down, but if he making weight properly he will be very dangerous.

92kg

the draw is unbalanced, most of favorites are in the bottom half. Valiev, Azarpira, Valencia and Nurmagomedov and I can add the Japanese kid Yoshida to the mix too, we know him very well because of his Iranian father, he won the Asian title this year and to me he has a chance for medal. unfortunately our World Champion Ghasempour got injured and we had to replace him with Azarpira who is good but Ghasempour was something else.

I think Akturk can win the top half, he is the clear favorite. but the bronze medal is up for grab,

UWW allowed not to shake hands. Ukrainians will not do this. Russians will not insist - they have to avoid scandals like at that one at the fencing championship.

Aren't Belarus and Russia not allowed to qualify?

We still do not know. Two requests to the IOC are pending (including a request from InsideTheGames).

According to the officially published rules they are definitely ineligible. Even twice:

1) they did not participate in the European Championship

2) They do not represent NOC so they cannot "obtain quotas for their NOCs".
The same situation was at the World Rowing Championship and they did not announce quota for belorussian despite of the fact that he finished at the quota winning place.

Makoev :( that defeat to :BRN will probably cost him the Olympics, as there only 5 more spots left eventually for europeans (3 of them will be awarded at world qualifying Tournament though) and many good european wrestlers will fight for them.

His best chance was here, oh well... it is how it is, what can we do..

We still have qualified only in 2 sports (Shooting and Athletics), clearly heading for the lowest participating record, Gonna be hard to qualify even 20 athletes to the games this time :(

as said above we don't know that yet

but I watched UWW commentators during the afternoon session and they never said anything about AIN wrestlers not being eligible to qualify. I will pay more attention tomorrow during the finals to see if they say anything about it.

personally I think they won't get the quota for now but that will be reserved for them until IOC takes the final decision in this matter. they have plenty of time before the continental qualifiers to do that.

    • The disappointments still outweigh the positives, by a mile actually but well…(someone should make a thread for that?)   For  Canada, in no specific order; A lot of these are similar to @Topicmaster1010's, but the same moments are standing out to me, there's also one that I'm not ready to mention yet because even though I'm proud of him, at the same time I'm still very disappointed about it.    - Rachel Homan finally winning an Olympic medal after receiving a lot of hate after Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022 for not making the playoffs in either, she deserves this more than anyone. Also her triple takeout in the 8th against Sweden - Entire cross country skiing team, no words to describe their performance, except saying they're easily the Canadian team of the Olympics and my expectations were blew out of the water.  - Piper Gilles/Paul Porier winning an Olympic medal in ice dance, three years ago, Gilles had a cancer diagnosis which put her dreams in jeopardy. Also very special given how many times they've been screwed over by judges this season.  - One of the greatest to ever do it in freestyle skiing, Mikael Kingsbury, winning gold in the Olympic debut of dual moguls in likely his last event at an Olympic Games.   - "Sparky" Mark McMorris, coming back from that nasty hard crash during big air training, to not only compete in slopestyle, but finish third in qualifications and land a run in the final to finish 8th.  - Brad Jacobs winning gold in men's curling as a big "fuck you" to everyone who has been accusing him of cheating online (I still like Edin but still), mostly people who don't understand curling ofc  - Kelsey Mitchell fulfilling her dreams of becoming a dual summer-winter Olympian finishing 13th in 2-women bobsleigh, after only 8 months of competing in this sport. Insane!  - Stephen Gogolev finishing 5th in the men's figure skating event, thought top 10-15 would've been what could realistically be expected. - Megan Oldham winning her first Olympic medal with a bronze in slopestyle, then later on winning a gold in big air, after finishing 4th in big air in Beijing.  - Deanna Stellato-Dudek becoming an Olympian after hitting her head during a training accident, which had her and Maxime Deschamps miss the figure skating team event.   - Valerie Maltais winning three Olympic medals in speed skating at 35, team pursuit gold, and 1500m/3000m bronze. At most you could've hoped for 2, one of the 3000m/mass start and the team pursuit. Her winning a medal in the 1500m, can't have imagined it beyond my wildest dreams, it was her first international podium in this event. It's also likely her last Olympics.  - Brendan Mackay coming up clutch on his last run to win an unexpected bronze in halfpipe as he didn't compete much this season, that being said he did win an event this season.  - Laurent Dubreuil's surprise medal in the 500m in speed skating - Courtney Sarault winning four medals, most medals by a Canadian at a Winter Olympics since Klassen in 2006, even though I choose to try and forget about short track.    Then International Athletes, in no specific order;  Johan-Olav Botn pointing to the heavens to honour Sivert-Guttorm Bakken   Benny Karl winning back-to-back golds in parallel giant slalom, ofc  Totallympian  @brunamoura's Olympic debut (we are all so proud of you) Men's freestyle skiing big air final, we were blessed with some insane tricks from the boys   I don’t know if I’ll be able to witness that high of a level in a competition in the next few decades  AJ Ginnis' farewell run, because it meant him becoming an Olympian  Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo creating history as the first athlete to win 6 Olympic golds in a single games One of the greatest alpine skiers of all time,  Federica Brignone, winning her long awaited Olympic gold, and a few days later winning another one, the more special one to me was the super-G though  Kacper Tomasiak becoming one of the breakout stars of the games with 3 medals  female biathlon team   Von Allmen with an incredible Olympic debut, with 3 golds   Nazgul, the dog, crossing the finish line during women's team sprint qualifications   Suvi Minkinnen and especially  Teresa Vobronikova winning bronze medals in biathlon    winning three medals in ski mountaineering, and especially Oriol Cardona Coll with the gold More on ski mountaineering,  Marianne Fatton winning gold in the women's event, she seems like a nice person and a great ambassador for the sport.   Mikhail Shaidorov upsetting Malinin to win gold in men's figure skating  Sturla Holm Lægrid admitting to cheating on his girlfriend publicly in an interview (kidding)   Nadja Käelin coming from out of nowhere, and having an incredible Olympics  Hassleborg and Isabella/Rasmus Wråna winning double gold for Sweden in curling, continuing their legacy in this sport, very happy for all of them as they are all some of my favourite curlers.  Tirinzoni winning an Olympic medal in what is likely to be her last Olympics after seeing how dominant she's been ever since the 2018-19 season, same with Pätz if she does hang up her broom.   Riku Miura/Ryuichi Kihara's WR in the pairs free skate   Viktor Thorup medal in the mass start, even though the race was boring  Eileen Gu winning gold in halfpipe, after her grandmother passed away the very same day. She didn't know about it until after the event, but I think to me with how she performed, her grandmother seemed to be giving her that extra bit of strength from above.  Medal for  Henry Sildaru in halfpipe, and not only a final but a top 8 for  Benjamin Lynch   Elina Ieva Bota winning a medal in women's singles luge  Finland’s success in nordic combined with 3 medals, Eero Hirvonen and Ilkka Herola   A few curling shots that stood out,  Mouat's run quadruple in the 7th end against Switzerland in the semifinals,  Muskatewitz's quadruple runback double in the 1st end against China and his spinner in the 5th end against Czechia (definitely a few that I'm missing) Just seeing how happy everyone was every time one of their athletes either medaled, or did better than expectations, definitely was one of them.
