Rowing WR World Championships 2023

Seriously, the stunning results are testament to the attitude of the Rowing coaches. It would have been quite easy after last years success to be complacent. Instead, the fact that only 1 of those 9 medals was a gold one, was enough reason to look critically at the program. After the EuCh earlier this year, which again saw many medals, but only 2 golds, the coaches reshuffled the boats, making some very tough and risky decisions. In the end, the result was 1 less medal, but 4 more golds than last year.

And we should have had 8 gold medals, not 5. Silver in the men's sculls 1.2 seconds behind the gold, men's eight 1.0 second behind the Brits and the women's quadruple sculls failing to win by 0.6 seconds. They flopped.

Is rowing a sport where world championships really say a lot about, in this case, next year's Olympics? Of course in terms of overall looks, not in exact medals  

 

Just wondering, since I don't really follow rowing (I did watch all the finals here), but for example in track cycling even world championships usually feel like there's always some athletes missing who'll only appear at the Olympics, no idea if that's the case for rowing as well (like the women's single sculls and one of the boats with two guys, the gap was so big...was everyone there?).

I think the track cycling was skewed by 1) the TeamGB strategy that puts every egg in the Olympic basket, unlike many other nations and 2) The specific odd case of Jason Kenny, whose tendency to disappear and reappear infuriated Bauge among others. Probably not unconnected to the fact that Kenny was not built in the prototypical sprinter style.

 

If you leave GB aside, most other countries tend to be consistent across worlds and Olympics, saving the experimentation for Europeans or (in case of AUS, NZL, CAN, TTO etc) Commies for example

On the most part yes. Only a couple of potential Olympic qualifiers didn't compete here, most notably Gramme Thomas who decided to skip the worlds after recently recovering from COVID and surgery. What a will say though is a lot of the big countries swapped around athletes to prioritise medals, so expect the likes of , ,  and  to clean up in the final regatta and for most of those athletes and many others to double up at Paris.

Seems to me rowing generally is in rather rude heath - and I agree, we absolutely should be trying to help our African friends join the party - there are a  number of fine lakes and rivers throughout Africa, and I imagine some European powers would have 'old' boat kit that would still be very useful to seed the sport in West Africa for example.

 

The only really surprising fall backs for me are the US and Australia, but I trust both will 'get it right on the night'

The US and Australian women actually did a good job with each country qualifying six boats out of seven. It was their male rowers who were below par.

I was quite surprised that  didn't put Miles Devereaux into the Single Sculls. Although he eventually finished in 7th place, he put in a great performance at the Under 23 Worlds this year and he was in Belgrade as a reserve so definitely think that was a missed opportunity.

 

As for the final regatta I would guess GB will be targeting the single and double sculls boats (not expecting them to go after the lightweight double sculls) but I think we'll be lucky if we get 2 additional quotas.

A small point about the final regatta is that they are people specific, rather than just for the NOCs so while some countries such as Romania enjoy doubling athletes up etc, it isn’t always possible (or preferable) for the last chance qualifiers 

 

It’s a consideration for Ireland with the women’s four. Keogh/Murtagh were in the pair here but if they went back to the four (with Lambe and the injured Hegarty), they’d certainly qualify, but may struggle in pairs and fours in Paris.
