Summer Olympic Games 2020 Qualification Systems

Recommended Posts

Individual qualifications are way to harsh. If you are from a small nation (not even that small, just not from top 8...), then you have to be among best 2/3 individuals on your continent...

That is really the problem with the focus on the team competitions with the amount of quotas.

Indeed, even if one continent grabs 4-5 team quotas, that still means only 7- 8 (out of 50?) nations from that continent will get to compete. Really ridiculous.

Really interesting that the FEI publishes the draft / comment process. I don't think any of the IF is as transparent with how they review their qualification process. I really wish all the IFs where this transparent.

Also, lol @ this comment from the Dutch Federation, which is clearly out for blood: "so that we can ensure quality and increase [sic] the risk of accidents". Also the Canadian Fed is still bitter about not having a dressage team in Rio xD

The World Karate Federation has presented the International Olympic Committee with a proposal for three weight classes each for men and women in the sport’s kumite competition at the 2020 Tokyo Games, an official of the world governing body for karate said Tuesday.

Toshihisa Nagura, general secretary of the federation, told a newsconference the proposed categories are over 75 kg, 75 kg and 67 for men and over 61 kg, 61 kg and 55 kg for women.

The proposal, along with selection criteria plans for competitors, is expected to be decided at next February’s IOC executive board meeting.

One athlete from each country or territory will be able to compete in each event, including the men’s and women’s kata contests. Every event will have 10 competitors for a total of 80 karateka.

Regarding weightlifting, it seems IWF decided to scrap team classification, opting for individual qualification. For each weight category there will be 14 lifters, with a maximum of one per NOC

This :(:(

"a maximum of four athletes per gender and only one per medal event."

terrible news for us, we don't have 100 medal chances at the Olympics, this means losing two chances already. limiting the number to 1 per nation in each weight is another bad news. we are not good in four lighter weight classes.

and if they drop one of the heaviest weights to make it 7 (per IOC rule) that means only 3 medal chances left for Iran ! :(
