Really disappointing that Team GB are sending a relatively small team to these championships - particularly the fact they are only sending 2 male judokas and unfortunately, they've been handed some pretty poor draws.

Men's 60Kg - Samuel Hall should be able to come through his first round but would then be up against world number 1 Yang Yung Wei

Men's 81Kg - Lachlan Moorhead hasn't had great consistency this year so I think he will struggle against the world number 17 Eljan Hajiyev. If he does make it through, he would be up against world number 2 Matthias Casse of Belgium.

Women's 52Kg - Although seeded, Chelsie Giles will have tough opening bout against Liu Liping of China.

Women's 57Kg - Acelya Toprak hasn't made the most of the opportunities she's had in the cycle to the point that she's not the highest placed Team GB athlete in the qualification ranking and now has Nekoda Smythe Davis back and performing well. Toprak has been drawn against Germany's Pauline Starke who is ranked 14th in the world. Come through that and she would be against world number 4 Sarah Leonie Cysique of France.

Women's 63Kg - First appearance of world number 1 Lucy Renshall in this qualification cycle. She had shoulder surgery over the summer so it will be interesting to see how she has rehabilitated. Her first match up is against either Cristina Cabana Perez of Spain or Amina Belkadi of Algeria.

Women's 70Kg - Kelly Pollard Petersen is seeded 8 and has a first-round bye. She will take on either world number 17 Gulnoza Matniyazova of Uzbekistan or USA's Chantal Wright. Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown could face world number 2 Sanne Van Djike if she can safely navigate the first round.

Women's 78Kg - Would like to see both Natalie Powell and Emma Reid make good progress in the draw. Powell has Morocco's Hafsa Yatim in the round of 32 whilst Reid is up against Ma Zhenzhao of China.

Japan dominating the field...what's new?

and if the men's "minor" medals have somehow gone to those who were predictable before the championship (maybe in another order, but that's it), among the women we have at least 2 big surprises and a youngster who's already anticipating her bright future on the podium, meanwhile a couple of the most expected "names" are missing.

let's see what happens tomorrow, when Japan are still the big favourites in both the women's -52kg and the men's -66kg classes.

Damn the 48kg looks incredibly cheap these days.

I don't think so...

Tsunoda is a great player, Scutto is the future...and a couple of big names (Tonaki included) had a bad day, which made the bottom half of the draw look "easy" for people who normally don't make the podium in the global events.

But the overall level wasn't cheap at all. ;)

p.s. the fact that some medals weren't easily predictable is only a plus for the sport, it shows that also the stars of the game can lose against mid-ranking players if they are not at 100% (or don't take them too seriously).

    • impossible, there are not enough venues in both towns and I mean, Milan doesn't have an Olympic Stadium, a decent Tennis Complex and a big Swimming Complex (not to mention the sea) Rome, on the other hand, doesn't have a Rowing/Canoeing Basin nor arenas and stadiums for the team sports beyond football and rugby there's no chance that all those venues would be built from scratch, meanwhile if we use both cities we already have almost everything we need, especially the most expensive and controversial sites

She wasn’t a top-tier athlete in that program anymore. She was at the end of her career. I would personally would rather race against Katie. She’s not as competitive as the other athletes,” he said. “It’s probably really unfair to say and not really where I want to go with this but that’s where we are with that.”   Uhlaender: “If I were Canada, I would be concerned in how this coach is representing the Olympic values for his country,” Uhlaender told Fox News Digital. “He hurt a whole field of athletes, all with dreams, and this sends the message that they don’t matter unless they are number one. All athletes matter, and we all deserve to compete fairly, with integrity, and respect. He did not respect anyone in that field. “This is not about my resume or how good the athletes were in the race. This is about the fact that he intentionally manipulated the competition to hurt myself and 13 other countries because he felt it necessary to eliminate all possibility. That is against the spirit of sport and not what the Olympic movement represents.”   Isn't it great when other people's dirty laundry is aired?  /sarcasm     (I was a little surprised to see NPR pick this up, but per this article, Uhlaender preemptively recorded the phone call after receiving a text from Cecchini that said he had 'bad news' for her.)
    • Idea (that I don't want to mess with right now, but someone else can steal the idea): Could feed the docs from LA28 + Paris 2024 through AI and see what it says.  (Would just take downloading them, perhaps merging them for ease of upload, and passing it through.)

    • How about we choose either Rome or Milano  I hate this timeline we have entered of multiple host cities / countries. The football World Cup became ludicrous, we don't need the Olympics to join them. At least not more than they already are.
