How Many Medals do You Expect from Your Nation at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022?

we can make a quick review of the Italian perspective...

Alpine Skiing: -2 medals (1 Gold)...

so, we're down to 3 real shots...the infamous 2014 Olympics would quickly lose their status of "worst Italian Olympics ever"... :nopompom:

Is it official? Are you sure?:wall:

Alpine Skiing: Ryding has given himself a confidence boost with his World cup win. Still an outsider but will hopefully at least challenge for Top 6

Bobsleigh: Hall has been having a good world cup season in both 2 Man and 4 Man. Would be nice if he can carry that form into the games

Cross Country Skiing: Musgrave will be thereabouts if hes on form. Likely just targeting personal bests. though Same for Young

Curling: Could challenge for medals in all 3 events and possibly a Gold or two. Would be really disappointing to not win something here

Figure Skating: Fear and Gibson may get a Top 10 in Ice Dance. Little else to get excited about

Freestyle Skiing: Multiple medal hopes in Slopestyle and cant rule out Big Air and Halfpipe glory either. If we only get 1 Medal I hope Woods can deliver after near misses at the last 2 games

Luge: Making up the numbers

Short Track Speed Skating: Sadly any hopes of something here went with  Elise Christies injury

Skeleton: Been our best source of medals for years but current crop hasnt been delivering of late. Hopefully they are just saving themselves for this

Snowboarding: Both Bankes and Ormerod could come away with something

Speed Skating: Just here for the experience

Would be nice if we can win 6 Medals and at least 2 of them Gold which will be our best ever showing. Although with Britain anything from the Winter Games is a bonus.

Are there some secret sliding events that I'm not aware of? If not, I'm not sure where 29 German medals should come from? :p

My predictions:

Luge: Will be harder to medal than in previous Olympics. I hope for one medal in each event (Women's Singles maybe 2), so 4-5 medals

Bobsleigh: Also one medal in each event, the 2-athlete-races may result in 2 German medals each. 4-6 medals

Skeleton: After 3 years of dominance during the Olympic cycle, the women somehow lost their dominance. Hopefully, we'll see the first German skeleton medal for a man. 0-1 medal.

Snowboard: Hopefully, one medal each in the PGS races and good chances in Men's SC. Hard to predict results here (except for Ledecka winning of course). We improved in the freestyle events over the last 4 years, but medals are unrealistic when the best North American athletes are present. 1-3 medals.

Nordic combined: Has been a powerhouse over the last decade, but it will be hard to get Individual medals this time as Riiber and Lamparter seem to be save bets for a medal. A team medal should be relatively save (even Gold is not unrealistic). 1-2 medals.

Ski jumping: Hard to predict without no foreign athlete ever made a jump in Beijing. Hopefully, Geiger and the Men's team are able to get a medal but that's far from being save. 1-3 medals.

Honestly, these are all realistic medal chances in terms of probability. Of course, surprises are always possible (Dürr or the men's speed team in Alpine skiing, men's Ski cross team, Hennig in CC skiathlon/10km, Men's hockey team, Biathlon men's relay) but they all are no favorites for winning a medal.

Counting the optimistic scenario's medals from above, Germany would end up with 20 medals.

However, there is a high possibility that Germany will fail to reach the threshold of 19 medals from 2014 which marks the historic low since reunification.

20 medal is realistic in my opinion:

Bob: 4

Luge/Skeleton: 5

Ski jumping: 4

Nordic combined: 3

Snowboard: 2

Ski Freestyle/Cross Country/Biathlon/Alpine skiing: 2

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Had some time to update my predictions from a month ago. Once again, please keep in mind that my knowledge of alpine skiing and the nordic sports (aside from biathlon) isn't that great. Biathlon, short track and the freestyle events were especially hard to predict given their unpredictability. Athletes who are in covid protocol but haven't been ruled out of an event are still listed.

Doesn’t seem realistic for Germany, especially 2 golds in skeleton and 2 golds in snowboard.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Technically if everyone doing alpine sking catches COVID and only the  indian is left ....... We can technically win a medal 😂😂

1) Isn’t there a rule for minimum number of athletes required?

2) Wouldn’t he/she still have to finish the race?

Nice list!

FYI, Kjeld Nuis is not selected for 1000m, he is the reserve. He only qualified for 1500m. Other two dutch riders qualified for the 1000m are Otterspeer and Verbij.

    • Lara Malsinier and Alex Insam are junior World Championship medalists from a few years ago. Maybe it was possible to provide them with private teams then and now they could even fight for a single podium from time to time. I mean especially women because there, for example: Canada or France can be in the top, so why not us? Now Rodlauer from Austria has joined the Italian team but for now there is a huge gap to the top and only Sieff and Lara Malsinier are jumping well. There was success in the Summer Grand Prix but with a weak competition. Even 3rd place in a single competition in winter is worth more than winning the LGP with a terrible squad.   It remains to wait but I fear that the most we can count on is a dramatic fight with France and maybe Finland in the mixed competition at the World Championships. Bresadola probably won't return this season, so the inconsistent Insam remains.
    • When did Kim Min-Seok switch to Hungary?
    • Earlier today, Taiwan beat the USA    Of course it's car from the best US tram but it's still a big deal for Taiwanese baseball
    • And even here we lose to France? I really don't know what's the point of organizing the Olympics if you can't make progress in practically any sport. France has the Olympics in 2030 and there they will definitely prepare 100%, just like for Paris. We can't do that. It's obvious that in ski jumping we have no chance of winning medals, but decency dictates that we should at least win here with a France like that.
    • There is no snow in Lillehammer
    • Finally the ski jumping season begins 11 teams in the (real) mixed team competition, no Switzerland.
    • Most of our athletes are constantly bothered by something: the pressure to qualify, the miss of pressure when they have already qualified, etc. It's the same in football: at the beginning of the season they are a poor form becouse of a little played and at the end of the season they are tired. They are always looking for excuses. A real champion always plays at a high level, like Sinner, and doesn`t look for 1000 excuses for his poor performance.
    • Think it is mentally difficult for the two teams with the Olympic place guaranteed and the pressure off, whereas everyone else is absolutely playing at 110%.  I'm sure things will be better once they get to Milan.
    • There's no point in cheating, these were terrible European Championships for us. Retronaz out of form, Constantini with a huge number of big mistakes. Only illness can excuse it... We've probably lost the last 10 matches with Switzerland... It looks like Constantini had the tournament of her life in mixed doubles in 2022 in Beijing and she will never reach this level again.
    • What good is it to us if we took 4th place and lost an important match? If Constantini was sick, I forgive her, but I'm afraid that the Italian team will not exceed a certain level. Yes, they have made progress since 2022, but they lack that one decisive step to become a class team. Here we lost all important matches with teams at our/higher level: Sui x2, Sco x2, Swe. We only won with the one we were supposed to win with. I don't believe in a medal for this team in Cortina. After 2022, it seemed that Constantini could dominate women's curling, but it didn't happen that way. After Sinner's recent successes, I opened my eyes a bit and started to demand more from our athletes, coaches, and officials. I have no intention of being satisfied with 4th place, because with this approach, you won't achieve anything great.
