Death sentence passed on Modern Pentathlon.

I feel it was already pretty dead once the IOC unceremoniously removed it from the list of core sports. Does anyone really think LA 2028 or Brisbane 2032 organizers are going to go to bat to make Modern Pentathlon one of their additional sport?

It's undeniably the Summer Olympic sport that provides the least bang for the buck for the IOC, and more than any other Summer sport (and arguably *any* sport other than the sliding sports) it's entirely dependent on the Olympics for it's survival.

lol, called it last year.

As others have said, cycling would be a terrible idea.

Knowing that this is a "military sport" and riding was a "obstacle course", it would be interesting if they would have a military obstacle course as the replacement event. Maybe something similar to American Ninja Warrior. I am not joking, that would both be unique to this sport at the Games and it would be fun. It would also require different skills than the simple running + shooting event and it would make a lot of sense given the history and origins of modern pentathlon.

Canoeing and sailing are right up there too.

Canoeing and Sailing have the advantage of still being Olympic sports until at least 2028, a luxury Modern Pentathlon wishes it had.

I think both Canoeing and Sailing are in grave danger of having the size of their program significantly downsized but I think both sports will remain in some form long term.

Canoeing and sailing at least have the ability to be shrunk (and in canoeing's case able to drop slalom). Modern pentathlon can't shrink without disappearing.

Slalom is more TV friendly than Sprint, which is why they added two more slalom events while they removed the two 200m sprint events. So yeah, there's no way that they are dropping slalom.

While I agree, slalom does have a large elephant in the room called venue.

Slalom canoe existed before the Olympics. It’ll be fine. Likewise sailing. The Americas Cup is bigger than the Olympics and there’ll always be rich people wanting to sail

Modern Pentathlon genuinely is in trouble of collapsing

First, every single one of our canoeing specialists had to change their discipline, European and World Champions had to forget about sprints and learn longer distances, jump into different boats, never having canoed in doubles or fours.

Then, this whole modern-pentathlon shake up in which we have a long and successful history.

It feels like this is a master plan to sabotage Lithuania, with many of our strategic sports under fire.

I don't care about making Olympics more hip with the youth, I was young when I fell in love with the Olympics and I don't particularly feel that the event catered to me, because it didn't have to. Rollerskating, skateboarding, wall-climbing, golfing, breakdancing, 13yo gold medalists... it's just ughhh making this a joke for me.

Don't blink, they'll find a way to ruin Athletics, Rowing and Swimming for me too.

Ah yes, the youthful and hip sport of golf. :p

I think the IOC needs to concede to either cut sports/events or increase the total number of athletes to around 12,000. That's how many athletes we needed once they made the (correct) decision to expand women's sports.

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
    • Also, I just logged back into my account, where it sent me to update my profile, and when I saved that, I got a screen that included a check mark next to 'Registered for the Draw'.  Not sure I totally trust it, but it does at least say so.  (There's nothing specifically referencing Drop 2 or anything...might just be a stock screen.). I'm curious what it would look like if you looked at it @esube.  https://tickets.la28.org/
