Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Sports Programme Road to LA 2028

Recommended Posts

World taekwondo has basically published the. qualification system for 2028

When it comes to quotas it remains unchanged per category (this is very disappointing):

Top 5 Olympic ranking

1 Grand Slam

9 continental quotas

1 host or Universality

plus potentially 1 refugee

What changes is the ranking system which starts from zero from 1st of June 2024. First period is until 31.05.26 and actually does not impact olympic qualification but will be crucial for qualification for Grand Prix series in 2026 which is part of olympic qualification.

the real olympic qualification starts in June 2026 again from zero and lasts until May 2028.

Grand slam remains in place but it is better structured as it is clear who qualifies for the tournament etc.

ah, they made some minor adjustments but that's more or less still the same shit.

ranking period will be cut down from 4 years to 1.5 years ! I would say 2 years (something like Judo) is the best

what's the point of having a "Non-Olympic Qualification Ranking Period" if they are going to make everybody start with 0 in June 2026 ? they should have a separate world ranking to use it for seeding purpose etc.

and this

Quote

Africa (2), Asia (2), Europe (2), and Pan Am (2), Oceania (1) from either solely through the CU Continental Qualification Tournaments or in combination with 4 year cycle continental multi sports games between September 2026 and April 2028

probably means they still didn't decided about the continental qualifiers. but I assume they will continue the same path with having 1 qualification tournament + those 2 per NOC restrictions

Yes I was hoping they will increase the number of ranking quotas plus skip the GS, add Oceania to another continent, and of course skip the 2 per NOC limitation for continentals. As of now they just changed the ranking period and improved the clarity on GS.
very disappointing overall

Not sure if we've covered this already, but it looks like we are going to have a change to the format of the 3-Day Eventing competition when we get to LA.

The IOC told the FEI at the end of last year that they had to come up with a new format for eventing and a proposal was submitted at the start of March.

The changes will see the team competition run as a short format competition with dressage to be followed by showjumping on day 2 and the cross-country phase being held on day 3. The individual competition would remain in the long format with a further round of show jumping taking place the day after the cross-country.

The rational for the change is that the IOC and OBS wanted the medals to be awarded after the cross-country phase of the competition because that is seen as the most popular part of the competition with the biggest degree of viewer engagement.

Is it. The show jumping is easier to follow and not as harsh.

  • 1 month later...

I am sorry i do not know if it was also mentioned but i received information today, that in LA, there will be athletics in first week and swimmning second week. Is it true?

What about other sports?

If yes, there will be total interesting for me 1st week with 40hours watching per day and 2nd week totally boring...

  • 2 weeks later...

I think the early dates of the Games will be a problem in 2028, especially for the road cycling (collision with Tour de France) and tennis (Wimbledon!). On the other hand if you can switch swimming and athletics I can imagine pushing tennis to the second week and having the final matches on the 3rd weekend and men's road race as the last - hence very prestigious - final of the Games, maybe even with the finish line on the stadium as part of the closing ceremony.

Looking forward to :)

Maybe if they created an Olympics specifically for sports like these. (won’t be watching a single second of it however :p)

Otherwise, yeah nope… Ugh.

Personally speaking (and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks this), I believe that any sports that get added to the Olympic programme need to have an aspect of physical ability. Chess (which is a mind sport) doesn’t fit in that category.

Chess-Boxing?

I imagine it like you put 16 guys on one side and 16 on the other side (and you must divide them in the categories of "heavy" and "light" guys, maybe the pieces should be like fighters from different weight categories) on a huge chess field and if there is an attempt of capturing a piece then there is a MMA-style between the pieces involved.

Did I get the point correctly? :D
