icon_oly18.png Rowing: From 23 to 27 quotas

icon_oly19.png Rugby Sevens: What? :p

icon_oly20.png Sailing: Like in Rio, 13 quotas.

icon_oly21.png Shooting: I guess 13 quotas

icon_oly22.png Table Tennis: 1 or 0

icon_oly23.png Taekwondo: Dell'Aquila is the biggest chance, maybe Rotolo

icon_oly24.png Tennis: 6 or 4

icon_oly26.png Volleyball: Both teams

icon_oly03.png Water Polo: Both teams

2020Tokyo.png.5b0ae7e11858b8cd415a9f2123 Total Sports: 36

2020Tokyo.png.5b0ae7e11858b8cd415a9f2123 Pessimistic Total Athletes: 241

Pessimistic prediction.

icon_oly29.png Baseball:  "No chance here, Netherlands will win the european quota." Why? It depend for roster, if many italo-american's player will be in national team, we can go to tokyo. Poss. 45%
icon_oly08.png Cycling - Track: "Italy is actually without a velodrome" Its' totally crazy, but we can qualify 10-12 bikers easily
icon_oly09.png Equestrian: Both jumping and -propably-eventing team will qualify.

icon_oly11.png Football: men's team have a big chance. Womens' team can qualify with some lucky

.
icon_oly15.png Field Hockey: Women's team are our biggest hope More than a hope. 51% today.
icon_oly29.png Skateboarding: I" know only Ivan Federico" Asia LAnzi in female street

In think that realistic prevision is 370-380 qualifiers. 400 is optimistic, less than 360 a tragedy

Well, I assume Samorin will be the likely host of the Group C team jumping qualifications, so you never know. With quotas being increased from one to two and Ukraine (probably) not cheating anymore, there will be a room for a Slovakian surprise. Which would be really crazy. :d

Man, even in a obscure Sci-Fi movie this would be a real miracle

That's like asking why is canoe slalom anywhere near the Olympic program? Finally a team sport that is not centred in Europe!

I would say its rather like asking why womens ice hockey is at the olympics. Besides that i dont see how rugby, basketball, field hockey or even volleyball can be called euro-centric. The same is true for curling and ice hockey at the winter olympics.

icon_oly27.png Weightlifting: 4 to 6

icon_oly28.png Wrestling: About 6

Athletics: My current prediction is 63, so it should be something between 60 and 70.

Basketball: I think the men's team has a good chance, i would say only Spain, Serbia and France are stronger. Lithuania, Latvia, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Slovenia are all about on the same level at best.

Boxing: I think 6 is too optimistic. On the womens side i would say only Apetz has a chance and on the mens side there are 5 guys with a chance, but only if you count Harutyunyan who became a pro last year. My guess would be 3-4 (Apetz, Baraou, Ibrahim and maybe Harutyunyan).

Fencing: I dont see Germany qualifying 9 athletes. I think 6 or 7 would be the best possible outcome.

Football: I think the mens team will struggle to say the least, the guys born in 1997 or later are very weak.

Judo: 12-14 is definitely too optimistic in my opinion, i think 8 would be good.

Rowing: The situation is pretty promising, but i for example dont see Germany qualifiying a boat in womens eight.

Sailing: I think you are too optimistic, but lets see, my guess would be 4-6 boats (Buhl, Jurczok/Lorenz and 2 out of the remaining categories).

Taekwondo: I think 3 would be very good given the current situation.

Volleyball: I think no team qualifying is definitely more realistic than both qualifying. I think the mens team is clearly stronger, but they have a more difficult path to qualify.

So what would be your conclusion? How many german athletes realistically in Tokyo? Will it be a bigger team than in Rio (athletes in new sports excluded)?

About Fencing: I am slightly more optimistic, because this time there will be team events for all weapons. Men's sabre and Women's foil at the very least have a good chance to qualify, which would make already six competitors. And three more individual athletes seems possible, IMO.

As I said, I really don't know about sailing (Sailing bores me, to be honest). I was just guessing based on the last few Olympics. Therefore I certainly won't contradict you.

Yeah, I was probably a bit too optimistisc at Judo, but everything under 10 competitors would seriously disappoint me.

And I avoided a specific number on purpose. :p But I think it will be less starters than in Rio, unless we qualify in a lot of team sports. The National Athletics and Swimming Federations will probably be much less generous, to begin with.

With boxing it is almost impossible to predict until we know the rules for qualification.

If professionals are allowed to compete and some of the German pros attempt to reach Tokyo it could as much as 10.

I have to read all the qualification rules carefully to have a better prediction. for examples in sports like Table Tennis or Cycling it will depend on the qualification rules. for example I know we won't get 3 free quotas in Cycling anymore. so I prefer to wait after the Asian Games (where we bring all we have to the competition) to have a better prediction.

btw I see some users expect few quotas in Karate, you guys should really read the qualification rules. this is a world wide sport and only 10 spots available for each event. it will be extremely hard to qualify. Iran is a powerhouse in this sport but still I will be VERY happy with only 3 quotas.

    • To be fair, the only way to make the qualifying day shorter is by allowing fewer athletes and I really don't think that's a good trade-off for the sport. Qualifying day can be the biggest spectacle one can imagine, it's still not going to draw amazing viewing numbers anyway, since it's basically just laying the foundation for the weekend.   Ice resurfacing definitely takes a while if done properly, if pushing it they could maybe get it done just under 15 minutes or so. I'm a little afraid it goes the way of athletics, where things are pushed more and more into ever shorter formats. Shorttrack days and sessions can only realistically be made shorter if they spread a World Cup out over 4 instead of 3 days, but it's not like Thursday is going to be a massive audience day.
    • I wish the ISU would make each of the sessions shorter… they all last between 3-5 hours (and sometimes 10 hours with the qualifying sessions) and me personally I find it highly annoying and unnecessary, because there’s so many breaks in between (for ice resurfacing it’s understandable, but it doesn’t take the 15-20 minutes long breaks to do it…)
    • The only thing I can think of that has gotten in the way can be geo-restrictions, like the Fridays being available on YouTube, but not the Saturdays and Sundays, preventing new people from really getting into it. Somehow I doubt a new format means it will be made more welcoming for new viewers though...
    • But what can be improved? Broadcasting has for years already been excellent, with races that are quite clear to follow and fine graphics that have all we need. How is "Suzanne Schulting for the Dutch Lions!" instead of "Suzanne Schulting from the Netherlands!" going to make it a better 'broadcast product'?
    • I do think we need a rethink of how short track is packaged as a broadcast product given how little money is involved. Pretty hard to make a living in that sport.
