2030 and 2034 to be awarded next year.  Sweden and Salt Lake City, I guess.

The Swiss :SUI Olympic committee is encouraged by the results of a feasibility study commissioned in the spring and has now requested the sports parliament to formally decide on the bid as the next step at its annual meeting on November 24.

@SalamAkhi Would the French 2030 bid that's been in the news this week actually include speed skating in :NED Thialf?  :yikes:

They'll really do anything to never hold this sport outside again.

I trust the source, so perhaps this might be it and France is about to get announced as host of the 2030 Olympics.  That would be a shocker

It is assumed they will award the 2034 Olympics to Salt Lake City.

I would not be thrilled with that, no :p

I mean, in terms of atmosphere, there is absolutely not going to be any better place in the world for speed skating - from national championships to Olympics - than Thialf. Hamar once rivalled it, but not anymore. That being said: I'd be sad to have Olympics in one country, and one sport pretty far away in another country.

Last week a Dutch former speed skater (Olympic champion Mark Tuitert) was talking about it during the World Cup broadcast, and he said he'd have been sad to have that in his career: according to him, a majority of athletes of course wants to go to the Olympics, but with part of that being immersed in the entire Olympic feeling, from a nation's culture to so many athletes from different sports being in the same area, which normally just doesn't happen. Olympics in France or Switzerland or so, with speed skating in Thialf, would mean the speed skating is basically just another championship instead of something special like the Olympics.

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
