Women's Football Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

I still can't believe that Brazil won't play in men's competition...

But I think it can be a hug opportunity for our team to reach the medal, or maybe, the dreamed gold medal. We are not favorite at all, but this coach is very nice, and he is improving our football. I think we had luck at the draw, the group isn't too difficult.

Pretty big update on substitutions: unlike tournaments prior to Tokyo, substitute athletes are allowed to be substituted in and out of the roster on a match per match basis. Which means that even if there is a minor injury or illness a player from the main roster can be substituted for one match then returned.

Any player that is on the roster for any match is eligible for a medal.

Previously if a player was replaced by a substitute they could not come back for the entire tournament.

...honestly at this point they might as well count the traveling alternates as part of the roster, like they started doing for ice hockey.

It's a way for sport federations to get around the athlete quota limit.

Funny enough, for football the athletes don't even stay at the athlete's village so a team of 22 players vs. 18 won't make a difference.

    • Yep. Not sure if it was the NOC or the biathlon federation (I assume the latter) that put him in the Livigno training 'world' with a former Italian biathlete as coach, but they can definitely also be blamed:  almost everyone involved in that shitshow got the motivation just sucked out of them by the methods and shitty atmosphere until they either retired or changed country

    • Lots of injuries, including often just pure bad-luck stuff like a fall from a set of stairs, illness, and of course the Sochi tragedy in 2014: one of her biathlon friends, young Julia Pieper, killed herself with a biathlon rifle early during the Olympics (she wasn't on the team, but was a training partner of both Preuss and Dahlmeier). Obviously a hard hit, which led to terrible Olympics for Preuss, with a DNF, awful results in her other individual races and a relay where she was the first runner for Germany, but fell early on, got snow in her rifle and broke a pole and ended up losing almost 3 minutes, which in turn resulted in Germany being off the podium for the first time ever.   After that came all the injuries and illness and everything. So glad to finally see her have her big individual global gold, that is so well deserved.
