I think that there is something in the color of the flag :p

I can see: the last medal contest of the entire Games, Men's Water Polo, :HUN and :ITA in the final for the Bronze with the same amount of 4th places. So what we will fight for? For the medal or for the REAL glory? :d

After Day 4 Rio: 55/306 events, 46 NOCs with medals

After Day 4 Tokyo: 72/339 events, 56 NOCs with medals

Still a long way to go but with 56 NOCs on the medal table, we're just 30 away from equalling the Rio figure. Right now, it looks good on getting there. First ever medal for :TKM Turkmenistan deserves a mention.

The fierce battle between the top 4 continues. Expectedly, :JPN Japan with the biggest improvement so far even leading the table. In Rio, Japan won 14 medals (3-1-10). Much more bronze medals have been converted into gold. :ROC Russia also impressive (3-6-3 in Rio).

Statistically speaking, the :USA US team slightly behind the Rio counter (9-8-9) by a bronze but with more events finished.

:CAN Canada with an impressive performance so far (0-1-4 in Rio) and :BRA Brazil benefiting from the new additions of skateboarding and surfing.

:AUS Australia has not yet won an Olympic gold outside of swimming, neither have the :KOR Koreans outside of archery.

:HUN Hungary and :ITA Italy not were they were five years ago right now.

Still missing out on medals that had some by the time in Rio: :GRE Greece, :POL Poland, :SWE Sweden, among others.

Great work, thanks for this. It is quite interesting.

As for Greece, I think we didn't have many medal chances yet, and many will come over the weekend and Monday with gymnastics (Petrounias) tennis (Tsitsipas and mixed doubles), sailing (a few of them), men's long jump (Tentoglou), men's rowing single sculls (Ntouskos), women's 25 pistol shooting (Korakaki), and men's 50 freestyle (Gkolomeev). So hopefully some of those will win medals.

After Day 5 Rio: 73/306 events, 50 NOCs with medals

After Day 5 Tokyo: 95/339 events, 62 NOCs with medals

The top three continuing to collect multiple gold medals, now running away from the :ROC Russians and :AUS Australia now comparable to Rio (5-2-5) thanks to Ariarne Titmus and a strong rowing performance.

The games have now started for the :NED Netherlands as well with medal haul of eight today.

We're also seeing a renaissance of :AUT Austrian sports given the disappointments in previous summer games (0-0-0 in London; 0-0-1 in Rio).

Historical day for the :FIJ Fiji national rugby 7s team as they repeated the success from the Rio games, while :HKG Hong Kong will end the games with most medals won at a single Olympics, no matter what.

The Tokyo Olympics are slowly shaping up to be a disappointment for the :ITA Italians. Certainly not in total medals (3-6-2 in Rio) but still only Dell'Aquila their lone Olympic champion so far. One also notes the high number of 4th* place finishes.

:KAZ Kazakhstan way behind their Rio performance thus far (2-2-3 in Rio) and same can be said about :VIE Vietnam (1-1-0 in Rio) without Hoàng Xuân Vinh.

This is magical, look at the celebrations in Fiji after their gold medal. It’s exactly how I like to imagine every small nation celebrating a medal…

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
