:ARG Rodriguez won a bronze medal in the women's 500m at the Four Continent Championships, which is South America's first ever medal at a senior ISU championship of any kind.

(Just don't look too deeply at the depth of the competition)

:TPE also won it's first ever medal at a senior ISU championship in the event.

:CAN Ted-Jan Bloemen becomes the first person outside of Europe to be a World and continental champion after winning the 5000m (again, don't look up the opposition). Not really much of an achievement given how new the Four continents championship is, but this is still a neat little piece of trivia.

Women’s mass start at the four continents championship. An 11 minute snoozer with six skaters.

The mass starts in speed skating are usually boring as hell. Short track's appeal is focused on the word "short". Long track mass start is a failed attempt to create competition & excitement.

  • 4 weeks later...

Rather boring European Championships this weekend held in :NED Heerenveen. The last international test for most European athletes before the Games.

A lot of Russians were in quarantine leading up to the tournament as the their team manager, sprint coach, and Olga Fatkulina (reigning European Champion 500m) were all tested positive soon after arrival in the Netherlands at the start of this week. Therefore the whole Russian team had to stay in their hotel rooms for 5 days, and even missed the first day of the event. Other Russians, including most elite male sprinters had decided last week to stay in Russia.

:SWE Nils van der Poel had already decided not to compete.

Medals:

GB had a 4th place in the men's 1000m which is their best finish in the 130 years of the EC, so they at least were happy at the week's events.

To be fair, it's not like this event has much of a history :p

No, that’s true. But at least countries like Germany, Austria, Czech Republic or Finland were able to win a medal or two. :dunno:

    • yeah, however, Zorzi is a good name for Italian sportsmen   we had the top scorer of the '90s Volleyball NT (he is from Noale, Venice...the same place of the Motorbike factory Aprilia) and we have more to come, as there are 3 brothers playing Kitesurf, 2 of them being youth European and World medallists in the last years   and there's also a TV presenter with that Family name, but that's another story

    • Ok, that's interesting. So often winter sports are village sports & so everyone with these rare patois names are family.
    • AFAIK, no they're from 2 different regions (Christian is from Trentino, Edoardo from Lombardy, Bergamo province) Zorzi is not an uncommon Family name in North-East of Italy
    • I will definitely vote on Sunday evening as well. This time for real.  Need to fill my final ranking, as i have a couple of clashes, but will be traveling on the weekend, so will finalize things when i get home.
    • I guess, it´s normal. If you look at it from the international federation view Relay quotas goes usually to powerhouses of the sport, countries where the sport is popular, followed by TV viewers etc... means money back, while a bunch of single quotas given for countries which will not even notice the athlete and almost majority of inhabitants do not even know there such sport at the Olympics may be a waste at the end   Not saying I am in favor of it obviously. But I can understand the point, me personally, I will be surprised if I will have time to catch a minute of live watching Shorttrack in Milano for example, quite sure our TV will not make it in its main channel live screen. I guarantee you that already
    • Biden had no idea, and neither does Trump. Each for different reasons: Biden feared World War III, while Trump wants to do business with Russia. It would take someone like Reagan to put more pressure on Russia, and that would also be a strategy for years, not 1-2.
    • Maybe they should but they clearly don't based on how the document is written, D.2.2 makes it clear that the fifth relay quota (for teams w/ 8 or more starting position) has pririty over individual quotas.   The fact that there is a gender imbalance in how the quotas are allocated is weird, but it does sort of make sense because of how D2.3 is written. Quotas are handed out in rotation, and it just so happens that if you go through the process the three missing quotas are all in the women's 1500m. It's a badly written document (like every single ISU Olympic qualification document always is >.> ) but I don't think there is another interpretation of it that could be valid. You award quotas in this order, going from 1st to 32nd (or 36th) in the ranking until you hid 112: Men's 500m Women's 500m Women's 1000m Men's 1000m Men's 1500m Women's 1500m They would not have included both genders on the same rotation if the intent wasn't to allow an inbalance in gender quotas after completing D2.3.
