Speed Skating 2021 - 2022 Discussion Thread

Major financial troubles for the Thialf stadium, basically the home of top-level speed skating.

They've already been having financial troubles for years, but the prices of gas - and so, electricity - which have absolutely skyrocketed in the past few months (it's 5+ times more expensive than half a year ago), have made it a critical situation.

If only :NED had its own supply of gas….oh, hang on….

Yeah, but getting that out of the ground has been drastically cut down last year or the year before, due to small but damaging earthquakes happening all the time because of it.

Quite the race for Bergsma (against a slightly collapsing Roest), with especially a fantastic last 1500m or so (28.3 and 28.5 before the last lap).

Alright skating in the men's 500m, although that was marred by bad starts, false starts (thanks to a starter who took his sweet time), injury and more negative things.

nd4jRjk.png

Near-insane times in the women's 1500m, unheard of even for a Dutch national championships race.

This is Wüst's 18th national 1500m medal in 19 participations, by the way.

Wow, Irene Schouten just skated 3:54.59 on the 3km, the 8th fastest time in history (in Heerenveen, not in SLC/Calgary) :yikes:

It might have been the most 'flat' 3k anyone has ever skated at this kind of level, unbelievable what a race: 30.3-30.7-30.6-30.6-30.7-30.8-30.7 makes it the first ever (!) women's 3k race with not a single 31+ lap.

Tomorrow is, among other things, the men's 10k. Could be very interesting with Bergsma in his current shape: he is someone for who the classic formula of (2 x 5km time) + 20s = 10km time often works very well, looking at the past 6-7 years of national championships that was often correct within a few seconds (more often faster than slower). That might put him on 12:35 or even world record pace tomorrow..

Screen dumps from Teletext?  You’ll be carving the results on the walls of Pyramids next.  :old:

Believe it or not, for national races like this it's usually the fastest one and I didn't want to wait for some document somewhere :d

She has come a long way for once a mass start specialist...
