- Sportsman: I would say it's pick between Viktor Axelsen (badminton) for his All-England win as the first European and Danish Men's Singles winner since 1999, or Sverri Nielsen (rowing) for his gold at the European Rowing Championships in Men's Single Sculls (M1x). I would personally pick Sverri Nielsen. Maybe because Viktor Axelsen has already won sportsperson of the year before.

- Sportswoman: Pernille Harder (football). Honourable mention would be Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (cycling)

- Team of the year: Track cycling 4km Pursuit Team. They set 3 world records during the World Championships. Without a doubt the sports performance of the year from any Danish athletes.

Your Favorite Olympic Moments
Posted

My Olympic memories doesn't go that far back due to my age.

Athens 2004 - My  first Olympic memory ever was me watching the men's shot put final from the Ancient Olympia Stadium and see Joachim B. Olsen winning bronze, later upgraded to silver. My favourite moment from the games however was the epic women's handball final between Denmark and South Korea. I remember little me was very entertained and excited throughout this final.

Torino 2006 - I didn't follow these games very much as I was still only watching sports occasionally. My favourite moment was probably watching Vincent Defrasne winning gold in men's pursuit, biathlon.

Beijing 2008 - First Olympics I watched clinched to the tv screen and tried to record as much of it on my tv-recorder.  My favourite moments from these Olympics are Usain Bolt's gold and WR on men's 100m and Yelena Isinbayeva's gold and WR in women's pole vault. An honourable mention should also go to Kirketerp and Warrer's dramatic gold medal in the 49er-class, sailing.

Vancouver 2010 - Simon Amman's double gold in men's ski jumping was a true Olympic moment for me.

London 2012 - David Rudisha's incredible WR in men's 800m and Usain Bolt's 200m WR, athletics. Special mentions go to MIchael Phelps becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time and Lasse Norman's Gold in omnium, track cycling.

Sochi 2014 - Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin's shared gold in women's downhill, alpine skiing. Also Kamil Stoch's double gold in ski jumping was a personal highlight.

Rio 2016 - So many favourite moments from these games! Pernille Blume's 50m freestyle gold in swimming, the Danish men's handball team winning gold, Sara Slott Petersen's winning silver in women's 400m hurdles, athletics, and lastly Jakob Fuglsang's silver medal in men's road race, cycling. My favourite of these are probably Sara Slott Petersen's silver as it's really rare for a Danish athlete to win a medal in athletics.

PyeongChang 2018 - Ester Ledecká's gold in women's super-g, alpine skiing, was incredible to witness.  Sven Kramer' wining his 3rd gold medal in a row in the 5000m distance, speed skating.

Tokyo 2020 - Hopefully seeing Armand Duplantis setting a new WR in men's pole vault, athletics. Following closely how Anna Emilie Moller will do in women's 3000m steeplechase, athletics. Hopefully a top 10 will be achieved.

International Olympic Committee News

I stumble upon this interesting article on playthegame by Jens Weinreich about how dependent many IFs are on the revenues from the Olympics:

https://playthegame.org/news/news-articles/2020/0644_how-federations-share-the-revenues-from-the-olympic-games/

Some paragraphs from the articles:

"...In 15 of 28 federations, the share of IOC revenues is between 35 and 96 percent. Some of these international federations are therefore in a situation that threatens their very existence: Gymnastics, Boxing (already almost insolvent and banned), Rowing, Shooting, Weightlifting, Archery, Fencing, Hockey, Canoeing, Triathlon, Wrestling, Sailing, Taekwondo, Golf and Modern Pentathlon. (Golf is an exception. Because the IGF was basically founded only to supervise the sport at the Olympic Games.)"

"The best insurance comes from Russian billionaires
At least half of the 28 federations can draw on large reserves in an emergency. It is often around 20 to 30 million francs in Swiss accounts. These reserves can help them survive the crisis, even if the IOC will not pay anything in advance but only at the end of 2021.

However, some federations such as Weightlifting have been living on these reserves for years because they cannot cover their expenses from ongoing operations. The situation seems to be most dramatic in the ICF (Canoeing) and UIPM (Modern Pentathlon) with over 90 percent dependency on the IOC.

According to annual reports, two federations, Shooting (ISSF) and Fencing (FIE) have hardly any substantial marketing revenues apart from the IOC royalties. The ISSF also receives more than 90 percent from the IOC. But in times of need, Russian billionaire Vladimir Lisin will stand up for the ISSF.

"Shooting and fencing have the best insurance of all federations," said one IOC member.

In Fencing (FIE) the president, Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, already donates an amount almost big as the IOC shares (on average over a four year period). There is not that much audited information provided by FIE. But there is an interesting and telling part in a report from the congress in 2018, held in Paris and financed by Usmanov.

The FIE delegates discussed the 2017 revenues: 11,582 million CHF overall with 5,764 million CHF from IOC - and 4,950 million as a donation from Alisher Usmanov, of course.

"I think our federation deserves it," said the billionaire.

"Applause" followed, according to the congress minutes.

Usmanov then continued: "In any case, for the future we need to understand that at present the financing of our federation is primarily supported by the President’s donations."

It's astonishing to see how dependent some IFs are. I kind of knew for some IFs the revenues from IOC and the Olympics contributed to a large part of their overall economy, but to see IF's like ICF and UIPM who's entire revenue almost comes from the IOC alone is baffling.

Also no suprise to see how a few billionaires basically keep some IFs single-handedly alive with their contributions beside the revenues they get from IOC.

In terms of Olympic qualification, we have the Pan American wrestling qualifiers and European boxing qualifiers set to begin this weekend. As for events ending next weekend we still have the African Sport Climbing Championships though based on the starting list it might as well be a national championship. No word on the women's handball Olympic qualification tournament though.

Yesterday, IHF wrote that the women's OQT will go ahead as planned.

The men’s OQT in Germany and Norway will be played without spectators. However, as people travelling from Republic of Korea are currently not allowed to enter Norway, the organiser of the men’s tournament in Norway will need to provide a solution or the tournament will be re-allocated.

In France, the current restrictions, which would not allow the tournament to be held with spectators, are valid until 15 April.
