The Dutch federation has decided to go back to having two 500m 'heats' in national competitions, the only fair way to have a 500m competition.

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Combined time or best time?

I believe they go back to combined time.

Is there a clear advantage to having either the inner or outer lane?

yes, those who go in the outer lane in the finish curve have a clear advantage, as they have a wider radius available to manage the forces in play...

I'm a big fan of statistics and I've decided to compile an unofficial world ranking based on the best four times skated per distance over the past 12 months (or 24 months for women's 5k and men's 10k), adjusted for the track they're skating on. I know most people won't care, but it's just a fun project for myself. If there's one place where others potentially might be interested, it would be here. This is what the top 10 per distance looks like right now before the start of the new season:

Women:
