Poll #12

These are olympic champions in certain events.

Imagine that all these champions are on the top of their game at the very same moment in time.

Who would have won gold?

According to @Agger suggestion, from now on, each event has an option "I WILL PASS ON THIS EVENT" for those who want to take part in the polls but don't want to vote in every event.

It can be easy to overlook Tracy Caulkins. She would have been a household name if there were no boycott at the Moscow Olympics.

#banbestmen

Athletics, men's Pole Vault...here my pick is :UKR Sergey Bubka, despite the impressive stuff by Mondo Duplantis in the last few years...

right now, what Bubka represented for the discipline (and the whole sport) is still unmatched...we'll see in a few years if Mondo would be able to keep up with the pace he set...

Swimming, women's 400 IM...as @dcro wrote, :USA Tracy Caulkins was heavily hit by the 1980 (and 1984) boycott, since those Olympics are not taken into consideration as many others and because the other international events didn't have so much hype and coverage as it happens nowadays...

but she was truly a great swimmer...and pound for pound, I think she has quite the edge over the great Katinka, despite the many titles won and the many records established by the Hungarian...

Judo, women's -48kg class...my pick is :PRK Kye Sun-Hui, one of the most underestimated champions in the history of Judo...

if only she wasn't from PRK, she would have got a lot more "good press" and she would have been described closer to what she deserved, advantage that instead went to Ryoko Tani (still, another great judo player), who gets a lot more credits because of the "obscure" background of the girl who beat her when they faced each other in a global final...

Judo, men's -60kg class...well, that's a no brainer...:JPN Tadahiro Nomura is "the man" in this weight class...

when he was on top of his game, he put on clinic after clinic, taking Judo to perfection, he was simply the state-of-the-art expression of this sport...

Fencing, women's Sabre...where are Sofya Velikaya and Olga Kharlan?

really, I'm not joking...I just refuse to vote for any of those Olympic Gold medallists, who can't even be in the same sentence with the 2 best players in the history of the game, who never won the Olympic Gold they deserve only because of some inexplicable reason...

therefore, I'm sorry, but I have to go for the new option...:WHT I'm passing this question...:yikes:

Since I think this is one of the very few chances we have to make an "imaginary podium", I'm full team Pareto here :cheer: despite the japanese is objectively the best in the category.

Unlike several on the list Paula was also world champion and has an additional olympic bronze medal.

Results of Poll #12:

ATHLETICS - Men's Pole Vault

1. Armand Duplantis SWE

2. Sergey Bubka UKR

3. Renaud Lavillenie FRA

SWIMMING - Women's 400m Individual Medley

1. Katinka Hosszu HUN

2. Yana Klochkova UKR

3. Ye Shiwen CHN

Here as a tie for 2nd place

JUDO - Women's Extra Lightweight (48kg)

1. Ryoko Tamura (Tani) JPN
2. Paula Pareto ARG

3. Sarah Menezes BRA

3. Distria Krasniqi KOS

JUDO - Men's Extra Lightweight (60kg)

1. Tadahiro Nomura JPN

2. Noahisa Takato JPN*

3. Beslan Mudranov RUS

3. Choi Min-ho KOR

Here was a tie for 2nd bronze medal (I had to pick sb from the athletes who all got 0 votes)

And there is * at Takato name because normally there should be one judoka from each NOC in each judo individual event. But these are imaginary olympics, so I have decided not to overcomplicate the results. In the world championships there would be 2 medals for one NOC possible in an individual event. I will leave * though, because when we finish all the events we may look at such cases again and check what the results would be if we use Paris 2024 qualification criteria.

FENCING - Women's Sabre Individual

1. Mariel Zagunis USA

2. Kim Ji-yeon KOR

3. Sofia Pozdniakova RUS

Here was a tie for 3rd place between two RUS athletes

    • Oops. I must have misunderstood. I could have sworn I saw her jogging in a field of other men. I assumed she had caught up to some of the slower men. (I admittedly wasn't watching closely.)
    • The women started earlier, it was a race without any men participating.
    • Looking forward to this competition starting tomorrow! Will be nice to see some other countries participate. USA women start with Namibia tomorrow.
    • This came out on the official website yesterday. Updated list of events and competition schedules in Japanese.   Padel and Teqball are on the schedules. Looks like two events for Padel and five for Teqball.   https://www.aichi-nagoya2026.org/files/common/260427競技スケジュール/01_日本語/01_アジア/第20回アジア競技大会競技プログラム.pdf   https://www.aichi-nagoya2026.org/files/common/260427競技スケジュール/01_日本語/01_アジア/第20回アジア競技大会デイリースケジュール.pdf   https://www.aichi-nagoya2026.org/files/common/260427競技スケジュール/01_日本語/01_アジア/第20回アジア競技大会セッションスケジュール.pdf   On the sports programme PDF, Padel is #25 and Teqball is #38.
    • looks like the agreement is the international federations are in fact hosting the event, not the AG organizers, so everything is up to them to make it happen.   Teqball is now confirmed to have 5 events (singles and doubles) does it mean easy 5 gold medals for Thailand ?   Padel is not 100% confirmed yet. I assume there are still talks ongoing between the IF and the Japanese organizers.
    • I feel like this year's Eurovision is more wide open than ever 😂   There isn't a clear favorite, and that makes everything more exciting. Finland is looking strong, sure, but Ukraine always knows how to surprise people and connect with them. I was checking out the odds a bit, and I was struck by how quickly they're rising.   By the way, I found a site that compares the odds pretty clearly: https://casasdeapuestaseurovision.com/   It’s nothing special, but it gives you an idea of how things are shaping up before the semifinals. Although we all know how this goes… at Eurovision, everything can change in a matter of minutes
