  1. Some of them very much believe in those policies. I’d be okay losing those ones.
  2. In the US we have a part of the federal government called “special districts”. Essentially they’re parts of the government that function somewhat independently to provide their service. John Oliver did a really good job of explaining this on his show, you can find a clip on YouTube (it would help you understand the system much more). In fact during elections we also elect the school broad and superintendent (school district president). So for instance, many of the teachers in my mothers district (she’s a teacher) voted for a school board they didn’t get, and their districts been in shambles because the people the town elected were not good at their job and practiced corruption from the very start, to the point were a 18 year old high school student (not me) sued them and has caused as mess for them ever since. In fact in the last election, I elected the president of my public university, so far I think I made that right choice, but apparently there’s some shady stuff happening. I could explain more about the American school system, but it’s really complicated.
  3. Yep 14 years of uniforms until university this year.
  4. Welcome @rajiv. Always nice to have another user around
  5. Also while we’re taking about schools. Did any other users have to where a “uniform” or certain dress to school?
  6. Nope, US went goes back to schools depending on what state you live in, what school district you are zoned for, and rather you attend private of public schools. Fun fact, there is no set national curriculum for schools. For instance Alabama could choose to not teach students about slavery and that would be perfectly legal. Also no one gives two shits about teachers in this country. In fact we have a shortage of teachers and public school funding. Our schools are in desperate need of repair, and many kids now attend school with bulletproof backpacks. It’s not a mystery why we rank in the mid 50s of worldwide education rankings. In terms of customs on the first day, General kids spend a lot of time dressing nicer than they usually would. There’s not really any traditions regarding a teacher. However, having attending private religious schools my entire life up until university, I can say that we always started the first day with a welcoming prayer, and a principal’s speech. Besides that nothing special really.
  7. Well now that’s a bit extreme. You sound like the New York Nicks CEO . What they did was wrong, but the action shouldn’t be punished with bans, especially when there are WAY more pressing issues in sports currently.
  8. If there’s anything Americans fans are best at, its creation controversy.
  9. Alright, so just finished binge watching the new Amazon series “Carnival Row”. I have no clue where to begin. My best explanation is this. If you’re looking for a show with the politics of Game Of Thrones, that’s also a Victorian and Imperial period piece, that’s also in a fantasy world with strange backstories and creatures like Game of Thrones/Harry Potter/Lord of Rings, where the plot is much like a Sherlock Holmes movie, and where the set looks like Sweenie Todd; then this is the show for you. Oh, did I also mention the show provides implied commentary on Racism, Sexism, Xenophobia, Discrimination, Hate Crime, Religious Extremism, Terrorism, Facism, Rule By Divine Right, Power Politics, and the “elite”. This show blew my mind. It’s so difficult to completely wrap your head around because of all the different stories and themes, but damn this is what we all wanted Game Of Thrones to be like. I mean there’s so, so, so much to talk about. I could probably spend months writing political, artistic, and critical commentary about the show. It’s still a bit early to decide how it will be received by everyone else, but damn. I highly recommend adding this to watchlist of shows. This 1st season (a 2nd seasons already been confirmed) is only 8 episodes and has a total run length of somehwhere around 7-7 1/2 hours. The cases great. The set design is great. The costuming is so good. The plot (which is most important to me as a writer and communications student) is pretty damn good. The political commentary is stirring (it works almost universally) and thought provoking. It can’t say enough good things about this show.
  10. I can’t even with all the sadness and loss this weekend :
  11. Based off the fathers jacket it looks like a Bahamaian Olympian, Commonwealth Games member, Pan American athlete has been caught in the storm with his child:
  12. Also, Trump had FEMA, this summer, transfer $155 million of its budget (specifically its disaster relief fund) to ICE. Well I’ll miss Florida as a state I guess.
  13. One victim from Saturday’s shooting is a 17 month year old toddler who was shot in the face. Unclear wether or not the toddler survived.
  14. If anyone ever wanted to know what a piece of shit would look like if it came to life look here: I was always taught about the second coming of Jesus in Catholic schooling, but I never knew I’d see the coming of Satan...
  15. Death toll at 7 as of this afternoon.
  16. Almost beat us @mrv86. US performance was very good, not our best, but good. We had multiple 13-16 year old athletes win medals, which means our Paralympic program is looking good for years to come. Very happy with our performance. I think I’ll attend the Paralympics in 2028 for sure.
  17. Schedule will be fine for those of us attending . I can only realistically see like 2 events a day anyways. The compact schedule has worked out well for my group. We can a lot of what we wanted to see Handball, Equestrian, Basketball (3x3), Canoe, Weightlifting
  18. Oddly enough Irma really didn’t do a crazy amount of damage, so hopefully this one goes the same way.
  19. I do know that the government of the Bahamas said the were trying to evacuate the northern islands yesterday so hopefully they were successful.
