Una cosa che si è spesso detta delle nostre prospettive per Milano Cortina è che abbiamo un'enorme mole di gare potenzialmente da podio legate a due delle discipline più imprevedibili del programma: biathlon e short track. Puoi fare il botto come ritrovarti con niente (o quasi niente, nel caso del biathlon, visto che c'è già un argento).

Questo è sicuramente vero per tanti sport, però paradossalmente credo che la carenza di impianti dovrebbe portare ad aumentare il rapporto ori/medaglie piuttosto che ad abbassarlo, nel senso che dovrebbe pesare più sulla qualità complessiva del movimento e sul numero di atleti di buon livello che non sul fenomeno generazionale.

Posso convenire sul fatto che il limite di questa spedizione italiana sia quella di non avere il vincitore seriale à la Klaebo/Stolz/etc., e neanche una batteria di vincitori annunciati. Però il punto è: che cosa ci si può fare? Si può lavorare per cercare il talento, per valorizzarlo e per costruirci sopra, però con la costruzione arrivi fino a produrre gli ottimi atleti. Per produrre i fenomeni che ti fanno medagliere da soli temo non ci sia ricetta e lavoro che tengano, te li trovi e puoi solo cercare di non rovinarli.

I agree that we should not put all the focus on gold, but not all medals are the same. I think it's all a matter of outcome vs. expectations. People should generally acknowledge the value of a medal of any colour (or even of 4th place or 5th place) and get rid of the 'Second place is the first loser mentality'. Still, I believe the disappointment of the Nika Prevcs of this world should be accepted and understood as well. I recently heard an interview with a famous Italian commentator who was the voice of cross-country skiing on public television for decades, and he mentioned that every time he goes to Norway, someone he meets brings up the 1994 men's relay as soon as they find out he's Italian. I don't think there's any way to convince the Norwegians that that silver medal should be celebrated, just like you won't convince Americans that the bronze medal in men's basketball in 2004 was a success, and so forth.
