  1. Exactly. In his place there will be someone who is able to do more than one apparatus at a reasonable level (no idea who that will be by the way). Now it's only hoping Zonderland will fight off the injury troubles.
  2. Right, Wikipedia (where S-A is still listed) confused me
  3. I thought South Africa wouldn't participate in continental qualifiers?
  4. As hoped and somewhat expected, Yuri van Gelder won't be in the team at the Olympic Test Event
  5. That's just ruining the competition by letting them participate anyway...
  6. Considering they absolutely love any support, I have no doubt they'll be happy to hear they have support from the Czech Republic Yeah, money is a real issue, but the Brazilian snow sports federation is (according to the 2 biathletes I know) one of the best sports federations in South America, so they're helping as much as they can. By the way, for years I had the thought in my mind of "One day I will spend some of the money I won with sports betting to help some athletes from small nations" Now I know Brazil is not small, but of course in biathlon they are. Considering that (and mostly the fact that they are close friends of mine by now) I'm sponsoring some relatively smaller things. For example, I'm paying the gym membership for one of them so for the first time she can train in the gym all off-season instead of only in the few weeks in European training camps. This leads to a summer of 2 trainings per day (one rollerski training + one gym training session), which doubles last summer's training effort and should very much increase next season's results. Nevertheless it's still a real issue, mostly because finding sponsors in Brazil for biathlon is nearly impossible (I mean...biathlon? Snow? What? ).
  7. I'll add Esparza and Jennings to the list when I have time to create a list Retired athletes didn't really miss out on qualification, they simply didn't try to qualify.
  8. Wonderful gymnastics performance in 1924, including synchronized sit-ups
  9. True...especially about the list for qualifying points. I mean, how many points you get is determined, amongst others, by the number of points of the other competitors in the race, but it's like this list of points is "secret".. To take my Brazilians as example once more: in order to know whether or not they're on track to reach the individual requirements to qualify for WCh/Olympics, I have to manually keep track of their IBU points for every competition and manually work out the averages and then hope I did it right and IBU doesn't suddenly come up with a much higher number.
  10. And another note (I know, it's hard to make a clear set of rules ): I would not add athletes who are banned, like Zaripova (?) or athletes of nations who are banned, like Russian athletics. It's not like they actually missed out on qualification, they just aren't allowed to participate.
  11. As for individual team members, I wouldn't list them I think. Without looking at rosters I'm sure almost every medal winning team of 2012 will have some new names this time. Therefore, for team events I would just look at the nations (like the Romanian women's gymnasts, the mentioned fencing teams, the Russian basketball team or the Japanese football women).
  12. I would say so, because technically they were apparently not good enough to be chosen Although these athletes could get an asterisk at their names or something similar.
  13. Yeah if the rule is actually changed now and wasn't already announced last year I can definitely understand.
  14. That's a shame to do it like that, especially if that would mean the Olympic champions aren't the best in their class but only are lucky to not have to compete against stronger competitors.
  15. Thank you I knew the names of Asadauskaite, Schöneborn, Marques and Lesun, the rest is all new to me. I'll come back here with more questions later probably
  16. I also remember Krisztian Berki, the Hungarian gymnast. He's 100% out of Rio, isn't he?
  17. The Romanian women's gymnastic team could be in trouble as well (according to the experts in the gymnastics thread): if they don't qualify that would be a huge thing, considering they won a medal in the last 10 straight Olympics. Any more examples?
  18. Hello I thought it'd be interesting to work on a list of London 2012 medalists who didn't qualify (or likely won't qualify) for Rio 2016. I am specifically talking about athletes/teams who missed out on qualification, not on athletes/teams who simply retired. Some basic rules: 1. Athletes who didn't qualify because they retired at a time they could still technically qualify for Rio won't count 2. Athletes who didn't qualify because they are banned will only count if they are officially still 2012 medalists (example: no Alptekin) 3. Athletes who are still active but were apparently not good enough to be selected for qualifiers will count Archery - Mariana Avitia (MEX): Bronze in 2012 - Oh Jin-hyek (KOR): Gold and bronze in 2012 Basketball - Russia men: Bronze in 2012 Boxing - Marlen Esparza (USA): Bronze in 2012 (women's 51kg) Canoeing - Slalom - Michal Martikan (SVK): Bronze in 2012 (men's C-1) - Émilie Fer (FRA): Gold in 2012 (women's K-1) - Ettienne Stott (GBR): Gold in 2012 (men's C-2) Diving - Laura Sanchez (MEX): Bronze in 2012 (women's springboard) Equestrian - Jumping - Saudi Arabia: Bronze in 2012 (team) Fencing - Bartosz Piasecki (NOR): Silver in 2012 (men's epée) - Choi Byung-chul (KOR): Bronze in 2012 (men's foil) - Japan men: Silver in 2012 (team foil) - Germany men: Bronze in 2012 (team foil) - Britta Heidemann (GER): Silver in 2012 (women's epée) - Valentina Vezzali (ITA): Bronze in 2012 (women's foil) Football - Japan women: Silver in 2012 Gymnastics - Artistic - Krisztian Berki (HUN): Gold in 2012 (men's pommel horse) - Matteo Morandi (ITA): Bronze in 2012 (men's rings) - Romania women: Bronze in 2012 Rowing - Canada men's eight: Silver in 2012 Sailing - Przemysław Miarczyński (POL): Bronze in 2012 (men's RS:X) - Zofia Klepacka (POL): Bronze in 2012 (women's RS:X) Shooting - Vijay Kumar (IND): Silver in 2012 (men's 25m rapid fire pistol) - Andrija Zlatic (SRB): Bronze in 2012 (men's 10m air pistol) - Håkan Dahlby (SWE): Silver in 2012 (men's double trap) - Lionel Cox (BEL): Silver in 2012 (men's 50m rifle prone) Swimming - Cesar Cielo (BRA): Bronze in 2012 (men's 50m freestyle) - Michael Jamieson (GBR): Silver in 2012 (men's 200m breaststroke) - Martina Grimaldi (ITA): Bronze in 2012 (women's 10k open water) Taekwondo - Sebastián Crismanich (ARG): Gold in 2012 (men's -80kg) - Carlo Molfetta (ITA): Gold in 2012 (men's +80kg) - Terrence Jennings (USA): Bronze in 2012 (men's -68kg) Wrestling - Jake Varner (USA): Gold in 2012 (men's freestyle -96kg) - Damian Janikowski (POL): Bronze in 2012 (men's Greco-Roman -84kg)
  19. When talking specifically about the song contests, it's "slow" because it's a general pattern to follow. I mean, the "real" Eurovision Song Contest also doesn't happen every week Apart from that, I agree with you. I remember once asking if I could open a cyclo-cross thread because talking about cyclo-cross in the road cycling thread was just making no sense at all. The answer was something like "After 1 January we will look at the possibilities"....like the world would suddenly be different at 1 January
  20. I don't think it's so bad for a relatively short championships. It saves the time of having the qualifications somewhere in the morning with only a few local athletics-crazy people watching.
  21. Media in Malawi report that they will have 2 taekwondo athletes in Rio. Their only entrant in the African qualifiers didn't make it, so these must be tripartite places or something (if true of course)? http://mwnation.com/taekwondo-to-send-2-to-brazil-olympics/
  22. You mean in Portland?
  23. But the Tour de Sétif is in Algeria right? So that's what I meant, the general standings in the Tour de Sétif (which you can say as "The general standing in Algeria", because it's the only big race in Algeria right now and it was the one we were talking about)
  24. It's a tour inside a tour inside a tour? Tourception?
