you are a bit wrong, it says top 8 + the next best weightlifter from each continent. even if top 8 are all from Asia. still one more Asian WLers will qualify so top 8 + the best from Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe and America. 8 + 5 + 1 (host/tripartite) = 14 for each weight

Tian Tao is the weirdest weightlifter I ever seen. this is happening so many times for him. he misses something and then he lifts 5kg heavier in next attempt. you never can predict anything with him. looks like he can lift the entire arena on his last attempt ! and I still wonder if China sends him to Tokyo, of course this gold medal improved his chance a lot. but still total record is lower than what Sohrab Moradi can do in a normal day. I assume Chinese coaches follow Moradi's injury news very closely to decide about their Olympic team. I'm sure they won't settle for anything less than 4 gold medals for their men's team.

Rostami bombed out. very normal. and now he is blaming the organizers (there was 4-5 minutes delay before his first attempt) 3rd time in a row he is bombing out. and our stupid federation still letting him to continue this way. and Tian Tao as usual misses 2 attempt, jump up 5kg and lifts it !

I skip that 1) 2) 3) things. just keep in mind they are listed in order Freestyle 57: huge gap between USA / Cuba and the rest. even though Cuba had nobody in the worlds in this weight but they have 2 good options here. 65: again huge huge huge gap between top 2 and the rest. nobody among the rest convinced me to be 4th in the list so I left it with 3. it could be 2 actually 74: the Colombian guy (who is in fact American) can surprise top 2. 86: I assumed USA will be represented by someone better than Downey. if they send him again Cuba will be the favorite. VEN is also not that far behind them 97: I assumed Salas will be back for Cuba, still it could be only 2. I had hard time to pick more than 2 wrestlers for this weight. CRC guy is American. and not that bad. 125: Didn't list Cuba here, because in past couple of years they used Oscar Pino in this weight. now he qualified Cuba in Greco-Roman. Not just "some good wrestlers" most of Russian top wrestlers are coming from Dagestan and even most of Russian-born wrestlers representing other countries are also from Dagestan. for example 97kg final between Sadullaev and Sharifov (AZE) was battle of Dagesntani wrestlers. good weather probably there is something in Caspian Sea about wrestling. because more than half of Iranian top wrestlers also come from the province of Mazandaran, the southern coast of Caspian Sea.

Silver in total and bronze in CJ for Ali Miri. not bad . and I'm sure in few years nobody will remember it was a non-Olympic weight and the new rule of using video challenge helped him in his 2nd CJ attempt. I searched a bit and in fact there will be "seeding system" for all Olympic qualifiers. but it will be different https://unitedworldwrestling.org/article/important-updates-ranking-series-olympic-qualification-events they are going to use 3 tournaments, 2019 Worlds, 2020 Continental Champs, one Ranking series tournament in 2020. and you have to participate in two of them to be eligible to be seeded !!! and I don't think this is going to help much. for example Iran most probably will try different wrestlers for the Olympic Qualifiers and even if they send the same wrestler, this is highly unlikely to send the same guy to the Asian Championship and/or a ranking event short time before the Olympic Qualifier. I think most of top wrestling nations will do the same. it just doesn't make sense . we may end up having Chinese Taipei as top seed ! (as the only wrestler participated in two of these 3 events) and what's the point of being "seeded" when other top guys are unseeded. you still can get them right in the first round the article says only top 2 will be seeded for the Olympic qualifier but I think Olympic itself will be the same as the WCh. top 4 will be seeded. as for Asia, let's just hope Kazakhstan doesn't do the drawing

(African wrestlers rarely participate outside of their continent, I don't know much about them) but keep in mind for obvious reasons I have much more information about the Asian wrestlers. but when it comes to Cuba for example they always surprise you by sending someone you didn't expect. but I will try

but isn't this some sort of cheating ?! it's like changing the rules in middle of the competition. obviously some athletes will benefit from this and some will get hurt , and we don't know that yet but all of them went to the 2019 European Champs thinking this is the Olympic qualifier. the same goes to Asia if they want to have another one in 2020 before the Olympics. it will help some of our athletes but everybody knew 2019 is the Olympic qualification tournament. changing it will be unfair.

and here is a summary of what happened to the Asian wrestlers and what's my expectation for the Asian OQT. of course this is way too early. for example I have absolutely no idea who we are going to send at 65. but I'm sure whoever we send will be better than anybody else "on paper" as for Iran, I'm 100% confident about 125, at 97 we have something like 5 candidates, the only wrestler I'm worried about is Ibragimov (UZB) who is getting old but still dangerous. at 65 all top Asian wrestlers are already qualified, there is no big name remaining but we don't have a great wrestler in this weight. whoever we send will be the favorite but still nothing is guaranteed. but the weight I'm worried about more is 74kg. Iran was supposed to send 3 cyclists to the World Champs including the first ever female cyclist. but UK simply denied visa for the entire team. this is the second time this year UK is hosting a WCh and denying visa for some countries. of course this one is not important because Iran is no big deal in cycling but imagine the reactions if it was Iran denying visa for somebody.

That was disappointing. here everybody wanted to see Hassan winning the gold on the mat. Yazdani didn't wrestle more than 8 minutes in the entire competition !! but still this is his 5th medal and the 3rd gold. he needs 3 more to become the best Iranian wrestler ever. to me it's hard to believe the injury, but who knows. after all it was a good opportunity for the young Deepak to wrestle the Olympic Champion. his loss.

The Asian Volleyball Championship finished today in Tehran. after losing in the first round to Australia. Iran came back strongly to beat them 3-0 in the final. that's Iran's 3rd Asian title after 2011 and 2013. for some stupid reasons Iran didn't send A team to 2015 and 2017 editions. Final Ranking 1. told you he is almost as good as Yazdani. also he is much better than Yazdani in gut wrench. one opportunity was enough for him btw, that was interesting bronze medal match between Kazakhstan vs France. they were about to rob the French wrestler because the takedown happened after the whistle but that challenge corrected the call. they can blame the ref for that whistle but the call was correct. and that's funny Kazakhstan got angry on the refs and their fans threw so many objects to the mat. seriously, Kazakhstan ?!

Another gold for Russia and another Kazakh cheater got demolished in the final.

He didn't last that against our second guy in this weight at the Asian Championships but then Ghasempour is almost as good as Yazdani. Yazdani had a close match with him in Iranian trials (I posted the video here). this is just our bad luck that we have 2 great wrestlers in the same weight (and one of them had to stay at home). while we had to send someone like Afzali at 74kg ! I don't think that's possible for Deepak to last that long but considering his age, he will improve and will be a bigger threat next time. but still I really thank him for beating Switzerland

we had two heart breaking defeats at 79 and 97. seriously I was expecting more from Shabani. but then Yazdani destroying everybody made up for that. I think for 3 matches he wasn't on the mat for more than 6 minutes !! and Ehsanpour won a epic match 13-12. we are 2-1 against Russia so far. I hope Behnam makes it 3-1. I know they are much stronger but it always feel GOOD to beat them in head to head and please Deepak. beat Switzerland.
