  1. Henri Deglane Grand Prix of France Preliminary Entries https://unitedworldwrestling.org/article/henri-deglane-grand-prix-france-preliminary-entries the most interesting name is Mijain Lopez ! the other Cuban guy Oscar Pino is here too. I think it can be some kind of Cuban trials. to makes things more interesting Riza Kayaalp is in the list too ! there are some other big names like Petriashvili, Snyder, Dake, Taylor, Khinchegashvili, Sharifov and Gadzhiev in the list too. sounds like a decent tournament if these guys actually show up.
  2. Doha, Qatar will host the Asian Qualification event right before the World Singles Qualifiers in March. I assume some other continents will do the same and will have their qualifiers in Doha.
  3. giving nickname is not a common thing here. only few athletes have a nickname and I don't think any national team (in any sport) ever had a commonly used nickname. some clubs maybe but NTs nope but since 2014 (if I'm not wrong about the year) there was a Cheetah on the NT jersey (I think they removed it recently) some journalists/fans started to call the team as "Yoozpalangan" (Means The Cheetahs) but still not commonly used. so while everybody calls the Iran national football team as "Team Melli" (without football) . I don't think we can consider it a nickname
  4. I just saw the notification without knowing what's happening here Melli means "national" . the word "team melli" some websites wrongly uses as the nickname simply means the "national team" !
  5. I just ran into this video, IOC's top 5 Olympic upsets in the history, whoever made that video for IOC is probably American, all of those 5 upsets are related to USA. what other "big big" upsets you guys can add to the list ? obviously Esther Ledecka but they made the clip before the 2018 Winter Games
  6. I found this, the most interesting thing about OCA is they first pick a number and then fit sports into it they wanted to have 40 sports, so Esports HAD to be part of something else, Kurash, Karate and Jujitsu also should be considered as just one sport !! why ? there are some "interesting" changes in the number of events for each sport. can someone guess what's the 8th event in Badminton ? mixed team relay ? really ?! having 6 events in Tennis is also confusing !? it was usually 7 or 5 ?! did they drop the mixed doubles ? 33 for shooting ?! did they bring back all team events ? it was 44 with all team events and 20 without them in Jakarta. so what does 33 means ? probably "some team events" and not all of them 13 for Taekwondo ? did they drop all non-Olympic events once again to add 5 STUPID poomsae events ?! Indonesia started this by dropping non-Olympic events , they were always part of the program. Poomsae in and half Kyurugi events out is extremely stupid. Archery will have full program with 10 events, both compound and recurve. for the first time and a 5th event in Squash ? mixed doubles maybe ? I rarely see doubles playing in Squash (I know that exists) that box is already small for 2 guys. let alone 4. and despite all news about increasing events of Kurash, it's still just 7 which is good. I wish it was 0 sport climbing still has 6 but I don't know if it's something stupid like what we had in Jakarta (Speed, Speed relay and combined) or the normal program with all 3 main disciplines (Speed, Boulder, Lead) ?! and 12 gold medals for roller skating come on. 12 !!! ------ from 2022 Paris program, Surfing and BMX freestyle are not present here, plus Canoe Slalom Extreme
  7. apparently China isn't really interested to host the Asian Qualifiers, Iran wrestling presidnet had a phone call with Nenad Lalovic (UWW president) today and was told that it's highly possible to have the Asian Qualifiers and the Asian Championships at the same time in Kazakhstan somewhere around April.
  8. nobody! there were almost no major international competition for our notable athletes this year. but if someone puts a gun on my head and forces me to pick a name, I would give it to Sardar Azmoun, he was the topscorer in the Russian League this year. I know this is nothing but I can't remember any kind of achievement this year. everything was cancelled. PS: there is no official award here since some years, but even if it was, that should be based on our own calendar, not 2020. a year here starts and finishes in March. so even those few sport events before the COVID shouldn't be counted, they were all before March 2020.
  9. Sharp eyes so here is the list, based on that table, we have 42 "sports" here. While Esports is a part of "mind sports" , they considered Dragon boat separately but that's usually counted under ICF events. I don't know where they are going to put Dancesport (breaking) to make it 40 sports as planned it seems Cycling BMX is only BMX racing, no BMX freestyle as far as I understand but based on that table, this is the final list of sports and disciplines. 1. Ahletics 2. Tennis (Tennis and Soft Tennis) 3. Aquatics (Artistic Swimming, Diving, Swimming, Water Polo and Marathon Swimming) 4. Cycling (Track, MTB, Road, BMX) 5. Triathlon 6. Archery 7. Shooting (Rifle/Pistol, Running Target and Shotgun) 8. Modern Pentathlon 9. Rowing 10. Canoe/Kayak (Slalom and Sprint) 11. Dragon Boat 12. Badminton 13. Basketball (Basketball and 3x3 Basketball) 14. Boxing 15. Mind Sports (Chess, Go, Xiangqi, Bridge and Esports) 16. Fencing 17. Football 18. Golf 19. Gymnastics (Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline) 20. Handball 21. Table Tennis 22. Hockey 23. Judo 24. Ju-Jitsu 25. Kurash 26. Kabaddi 27. Wushu 28. Roller Sports (Roller Skating, Skateboard) 29. Rugby 7s 30. Sepaktakraw 31. Squash 32. Taekwondo 33. Wrestling 34. Karate 35. Volleyball (Indoor and Beach) 36. Sailing 37. Weightlifting 38. Equestrian 39. Cricket 40. Baseball/Softball (Baseball and Softball) 41. Sport Climbing 42. Dance Sport (Breaking)
  10. and I can see Bridge too ! and 10 seconds of googling confirmed that http://www.worldbridge.org/2020/10/02/bridge-included-in-the-asian-olympic-games-2022/ in that program, they considered Esports as part of the Chess/Go/Xiangqi/Bridge program as one sport I can't read the name. board games maybe - so from 2018 program, they only dropped Bowling, Pencak silat, Sambo, Jet Ski and Paragliding. Bowling had its debut in 1978 and was in AG program since 1994.
  11. oh well, Esports and Breaking ! btw this pics show the draft for the AG programme, apparently with the number of events and disciplines for each sport but it's unreadable ! (or maybe that number is not the number of events but the number of days for each sport) The OCA says they already had 40 sports, it should be 42 now, right ?! because it seems they didn't drop any sport. how hard it is to publish the details of events ? or at least the number of them for each sport even my not-so-sharp eyes can see "soft tennis", "marathon swimming" and "running target shooting events", Dragon boat, roller skating in the program as separate disciplines. I wasn't sure about Soft Tennis (which will be part of Tennis once again) and it will be Marathon swimming's debut.
  12. Bronze for and it wasn't some lucky draw, he had a tough draw actually and he beat 3 quality guys to win this bronze. I'm very surprised by how much he is improved. unbelievable
  13. Russia took 4 golds today and I think they will win 4 more tomorrow, 8 out of 10 and the other 2 guys lost the gold mostly because they got injured but that's OK, because other Russian wrestlers (representing Poland and Hungary) will win the gold. 74kg was the most interesting final, that was a nice action near the end from Zhamalov. you always have to lead by more than 2pts against a Russian wrestler, they are just too good. this Zhamalov guy is in the mix now, with Sidakov and Gazimagomedov. I still think Sidakov is the better choice. good bronze medal for Amouzad against someone almost twice his age (33 to 18) but he really needs to change his style, you can't do exactly the same against everybody. they will learn how to adjust and Russian coaches are just perfect in analyzing opponents. also I'm very impressed by Argentinian Destribats it seems his Olympic qualification wasn't just an accident. he beat a world bronze medalist from India here. when was the last time an Argentinian male wrestler beat a former world medalist ? I think it never happened before
  14. yeah I guess Bulgaria came a bit late, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Slovakia and even Poland and France took the better Russians first and let's not forget Azerbaijan ! (Azerbaijan can't pay big money anymore though)
  15. the level of freestyle competition is bit lower comparing to Greco. simply because Europe is strong in Greco and we had more European wrestlers in this competition comparing to other continents. Chamizo-Zhamalov will be the most interesting match for tomorrow. hard to say who is the favorite. and Russia will have 4 in the final. they were undefeated today the 5th guy withdrew for injury probably and Amouzad had a good match vs Uguev. he was competing with the World Champion but made a mistake and got pinned. I really think in a year or two he will be able to compete for the world title. but I don't think he will be ready for Tokyo and beside that considering his age his body will grow and he has to wrestle at 61kg or 65kg. a VERY interesing point about 65kg bracket, Haji Aliyev and Gadzhimurad Rashiov will wrestle right in the first round! the last time they faced Aliyev ended up angry throwing everything to the refs this will be fun
  16. nice try this time 100% correct, yes he is known exactly as "Rahman Amouzad" here and nothing else. while UWW lists him as Rahman Mousa AMOUZADKHALILI as I said he is suppose to be the next big thing, he is already very popular for someone at the age of 18!
  17. for a second I thought Chamizo is going to lose to the Turk, he was down 6-1 but then he changed gear and ate him alive ! everybody expects a Chamizo-Zhamalov final. Zhamalov won the Russian nationals surprisngly. if he wins gold here he will have a chance for Tokyo. he didn't face the world champion Sidakov but beat the guy who beat Sidakov. (I mean Tsabolov) we have only one wrestler in the freestyle competition, 18 years old Amouzad who teched his opponents so far but will have an uphill task this afternoon against the World Champion Uguev. so many people here consider Amouzad the future Olympic champion, the next big thing. he won the World Youth title last year and this is still too early for him to beat likes of Uguev but that will be a very good chance for him to face such a quality wrestler.
  18. both. they were always good in lower weights. they rarely win medals in world level but they are always "close" now with less medal contenders, they can finish on the podium.
  19. the wrestling database tells us that she only wrestled for Slovakia in her entire career and never achieved anything special until today. even though even here she only beat Peru to reach the semifinal. and yes Salkazanov, Gulaev, Makoev they are all listed in the entry list for the freestyle competition. and this tournament is a replacement for the cancelled World Championship.
  20. I think we should stop complaining about the refs, what happens to Armenian wrestlers is much much worse. they got robbed a gold and a bronze today. and this is not even a very important event Maskevich made my day by destroying the Olympic champion. as for the Iranian wrestlers, Saravi had a good and close fight with the World Champion, he lost because of that 2points caution nobody knew where it came from! and Nouri lost the bronze medal match to his own mistakes, he did the same mistake 6 times! that's unbelievable. Vlasov still has it. he is nothing special in the standing position but man he can throw anybody. his throws are fantastic. I expect Russia to win all 5 golds tomorrow, none of them are facing a huge challenge. one of our freestyle guys is Coronavirus infected and I assume the other guy will test positive soon. so our small team is already down to 3 (and probably 2)
  21. Today semifinals 60kg: Uyar vs Sharshenbekov / Maryanyan vs Fris 63kg: Torba vs Djebbari / Lokyaev vs Sulaimanov 82kg: Alirzaev vs Bradu / Schwarz vs Aydin 97kg: Omarov vs Szoke / Saravi vs Evloev 87kg: Yildrim vs Kandelaki / Semenov vs Ovasapyan I think Russia is capable of winning all 5 gold medals in these weights. they are all huge favorites . it's highly possible for Russia to finish the GR competition with 9 gold medals! glad to see Saravi in the SF, this will be great opportunity for him to face the world champion but his QF match vs Kakhelashvili could go either way, he was lucky that the Italian received the 3rd caution. they both failed to score and the refs HAD to pick one as winner, this time he was lucky but we usually lose matches like this. there is nothing to be proud of in these kind of wins . this is why I hate guys like Nabi or Kudla. but I'm glad he was able to stand against such a strong guy like Nikoloz (I consider him one of the favorites for the OG medal)
  22. Agree in Iran we always use double elimination format for most of our local wrestling tournaments (specially for the trials) but it also has its own problems. sometimes we have 3 guys left after beating each other ! and in this case the winner will be decided by minor details, I think nobody wants that. there is no perfect system but if they want to use this direct elimination format, they have to improve their seeding system. Judo and Taekwondo managed to have a decent ranking system but for wrestling their ranking is more like a joke. still better than nothing though
  23. I thought you hacked into some government servers to find that information and I wonder why Olympic schedule should be considered confidential ? but well if breakdance is an Olympic sport, nothing else surprises me anymore
