Canadian Trials - Day 5 Qualifiers
Women's 100m Freestyle - Penny Oleksiak, Chantal Van Landeghem
Women's 800m Freestyle - Brittany MacLean
Women's 200m Breaststroke - Kierra Smith, Martha McCabe
Women's 4x100m Freestyle - Penny Oleksiak, Chantal Van Landeghem, Sandrine Mainville, Michelle Williams
Penny Oleksiak set a new national record and world junior record in the women's 100m freestyle. No one qualified in the men's 100m butterfly and men's 200m backstroke.

When was the last time a non-European men's team qualified through the final qualification tournament?
-
The main issue is Germany, like all European teams will likely not play with its best team. It is doubtful that any player selected to Euro 2016 will compete at the Olympics.
You know with Euro 2016 and Copa America Century Edition we could see a team from Asia or Africa win gold at the Olympics. Return of Nigeria?
-
Santo Condorelli false started in the 100m butterfly and thus will not compete in the finals. Canada may not have anyone competing in the mens's 100m fly because of that.

Pakistan won't accept a slot either.
They did in 2012. Or does this have to do with the current state of their sporting federations?
-
Looking at 2012 there were 40 spots given either as tripartite or reallocation so most nations in that list will qualify. Also just because the nation is eligible for a tripartite spot doesn't mean they applied for one in shooting. In 2012 only 9 nations got a tripartite spot (other tripartite nations qualified through reallocation)

Interesting to note that Joao Rodrigues from Portugal has been selected for his 7th Olympics in RS:X. Quite an achievement, especially since the windsurfer is quite a physical class. He participated all the way back in Barcelona in '92.
He's competed in three different boat classes, a very impressive athlete.
-
Will continental separation be a factor?
-
lol the final scoreboard said 8-6 for me. Typical Canada.
-
At least it wasn't by one goal.

That is crazy, 48.25 would have come 5th at the 2015 World Championships in the 100m Free and he would have made the final at London 2012.
For the Women's 53.88 would have put her 9th at London 2012 and 6th at 2015 World Championships.
Hopefully they have another think about their selection policy and allow the two of them to compete at the Olympics.
We’ll see, they might let them (and possibly the second place finishers) compete since they are already competing in the relay.

It's both sad and pretty cool that a country's only very real chance of qualifying quotas for the Olympics comes in a team sport
You see it in other sports too, Pakistan in field hockey, Honduras (and other African nations) in football.

So what's the record?
Or you mean it has never happened before that Japan isn't represented in the 100 free?
Men's 100m Freestyle
JPN Olympic Standard – 48.16
Katsumi Nakamura, 48.25 NR
Women's 100m Freestyle
JPN Olympic Standard – 53.81
Miki Uchida, 53.88 NR
-
Japan literally set a new national record in the men's and women's 100m freestyle yet neither swimmer will go to Rio because they didn't reach the Japanese standard.
-
Good luck to Macedonia, this will be their best chance at qualifying anyone outside of invitations. The match against Tunisia tomorrow will be most important.
-
Spain will be the favourite over Canada, but Canada will have a chance. This means Canada will lose by 1 goal.

one is likely to beat the netherlands?
France has a good chance. Maybe Netherlands is the favourite based on the results in this tournament.

no France - Spain
No Canada vs. Spain.
Italy finished 1st due to goal difference and Netherlands finished second because they defeated Spain
-
As a reminder the Canadian Trials are also the New Zealand trials for swimmers studying in North America. So far Corey Main in the men's 100m backstroke and Matt Hutchins in the men's 400m freestyle have qualified and will be added to the team.

She's something special and only 15. Hopefully she improves just a bit more to turn those final appearances into medals.
