I think the local organizers/EOC are taking a different approach on building the sports program for these Games.

The Olympic sports that feature on the program will likely serve as Olympic qualifiers or European Championships (likely awarding a fair amount of points in Olympic rankings), meaning that the majority of the best European athletes in those sports will hopefully contest the Games. Likewise they are creating an intriguing program of non-Olympic sports that will likely help draw local attention/drive curiosity in the Games, that will almost certainly feature the best athletes in Europe.

Essentially, they are attempting to create a sports program that will drive interest in the Games and attract the best athletes in participating sports. I don’t think it’s a bad idea. It’s no secret that the European Games have struggled to gain notoriety, so this model is worth a try.

This teqball won't really create much interest in Poland due to football tennis being way more popular already. Then again, there are only few countries in the world where volleyball is as popular as here. Same goes for beach handball due to handball being the third most popular team sport in Poland. So the interest doesn't come curiosity but from volleyball and handball being fairly popular sports in Poland already.

  2. So it's basically a Football table tennis instead of football tennis. Great. Not exactly innovative, just following the same concept on a smaller playing field.

One would imagine Brazil would be good at this given their knack for football & volleyball at the same time. But of course Brazil can't take part in European Games so nevermind.

I finally got around to watching the first diamond league of the year, what is that shit of field events final?? top 3 gets one throw no matter what was the result?? so the leader who prior to that led by 10 meters having a bad throw and he's done??

Yep, welcome to Next Gen ideas bullshit. This is on par with break dance being an Olympic "sport" :coffee:

Or perhaps the question of whether or not the Games should go ahead in her home country?

Tennis is one sport where Olympic gold medal is not the highest achievement in sports. Besides, Tokyo tournament will be played on hard courts so Osaka's favorite surface. She can ignore international journalists in Paris but I don't really think she actually cares what the official line is in Japan - especially that she doesn't even live there to begin with.

  5. Right after Bianca Andreescu pulled out of Strasbourg to raise her withdrawal number to God knows how many in the last 12 months - Naomi Osaka said she's gonna ignore all the media press conferences during RG for "mental health reasons" The WTA Tour of Drama Horrors continues!

I wonder will those journalists cry foul over freedom of speech? Usually there are heavy fines for pro athletes who decline interviews and Osaka is bold enough to annouce than even before the first match. I can only speculate she was afraid of questions about her below par performances on clay over the years.

  6. Wait, isn't Catalonia viewed as the politically left-wing part of Spain? So how does the left-wing central government view them? As far-left or right-wing? Something doesn't add up here or am I missing something? :mumble:  Unless they still play the extinct Republican card and pull out the anarchists crap?

  7. That was helluva boring. Ferrari should haven take a 5 place grid penalty instead LeClerc DNS in his home country. Ferrari screws up the pooch again.

Bottas retired with a jammed wheel nut during his pitstop. I wonder if this is the season where all the little things suddenly start to happen to him?

  8. More likely UEFA Euros will lose prestige. Obviously FIFA is looking at money and money alone. More matches means more money for the big wigs.

Euros could be rendered for B-teams calliber or U-23 like at the Olympics. This is far from being made official. Unlike athletics there are two governing bodies involved and UEFA will definitely see this idea as a major threat.

  9. :HUN Sandor Puhl - referee of 1994 World Cup final and 1997 UEFA Champions League final has passed away at age 65.

He was probably the best European referee in the mid 90s but his international career was cut short when he failed to send off Denis Irwin in UCL match in late 1997 IIRC. Laszlo Vagner was nominated for 1998 World Cup as well.
