@NearPup @intoronto Given the disappointing results at the American trials on the 100 freestyle (women), is there a chance that Canada will make it difficult for Australia to win the 4x100 freestyle? With Oleksiak and Ruck that should work?

Ruck is struggling. I think the 4x100 is out of question, unless another girl steps up.

Ruck just finished 12th!! in the 200m freestyle (top 10 qualify for finals), an event she has gone 1:54 before and is the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion.

The only thing is she struggled at the 2016 trials, and went to have outstanding performances in the relay.

It’s gonna be gold for Australia (unless they drown) and USA/Canada/China/GB/Netherlands for the minor medals.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

We’ll have a better idea after they hold the women’s 100m free at trials, but Australia really looks like a lock. Ruck looks out of form right now.

Someone in the swimswam comments said she may have a wrist injury. I would be more worried about the 4x200m than the 100m but let’s see how the rest of the trials pan out.

Day 2 Canadian trials

Women's 200m free: Summer Mcintosh wins! (1:56.19) Penny Oleksiak ( 1:57.24) is second and was already nominated. Rebecca Smith (1:57.76) and Katerine Savard (1:57.79) were third and fourth and will be named to the relay team most likely.

Men's 200m free: No one qualifies, no relay either. Peter Brothers at 1:49.07 top finisher, and might qualify through the B standard.

Women's 100m breast: Kelsey Wog (1:06.77)

Men's 100m breast: No A standard, top finisher:  Gabe Mastromatteo 1:00.75

:USA Simone Manuel made the US team at the very last moment, winning the women's 50 free.

I hope Simone could be fit enough to win the gold medal. But if she can't, I won't fault her considering her health issues. Making the team after a quick turnaround from her health issues is an achievement in itself.

:CAN Canadian Olympic trials, day 3

Women's 800m Free

  • Summer McIntosh - 8:29.48

Men's 1500m Free - no automatic qualifier

Women's 200m IM

  • Sydney Pickrem - 2:09.24
  • Kelsey Wog - 2:10.21

Men's 200m IM

  • Finlay Knox - 1:58.07

Women's 50m Free

  • Kayla Sanchez - 24.66

Men's 50m Free

  • Brent Hayden - 21.80
  • Joshua Liendo - 21.90

Really happy to see Hayden’s comeback pay off. I don’t think he has a realistic chance to medal in Tokyo unless the mixed medley relay does something special but it will be nice for the team to have him around.

    • I still shocks, that a country of 4-5 million inhabitants? can be a powerhouse in almost every winter sport + handball, football (most recently with Haaland) and athletics: Ingebrigtsen, Warholm, etc. With such a small population, they can't be missing out on any major talent, surely? This must be the best training system in the world...
    • FIFA announced the stadium and time for each match   for  Iran, it will be 2 matches in LA (and not just 1) and 1 in Seattle and luckily we avoided playing in Canada. absolutely nothing against the country, but there are just too many douchebag Iranian groups in Vancouver trying to mix everything with their stupid politics. it's better to stay away from them.   that can happen in US too but less likely. playing in LA is more like playing at home, at least I hope so. 2022 Qatar was a disaster from our point of view, hopefully this one remains only about football.

    • I don't think he'll mind too much
    • But his time isn`t valid at track record.
    • Vladimir Semirunniy dropped a 12:28 in the 10000m B division, which qualifies him for the Olympics as the fastest time this season (with the big asterisk that it was done in a quad start). Must be a real relief for the Polish team given he isn't looking likely to qualify for the 10000m (or the 5000m) by ranking.   Really problematic that they rank pair start and quad start times together, but whatever.   Also, the Wikipedia page for qualification is updated through the second day.
