And the tight race between boxing and weightlifting for the most absurd and stupid qualifications is getting closer and closer. Just when you think, one is getting a lead, the other catches up with a new twist, after a talk with the team-IOC radio. Who is going to bring home the victory? Who is going to outdo themselves? Stay tuned for the exciting final stages of this historic 5 year race!

Really unfair system:

Cleary the IOC doesn't care about gender equality!!

How does gender equality factor into this? It's not like they are hosting the men's events and not the women's. "Continental inequality" would be a better term.

Women who are pregnant had no chance to qualify for this tournament, ie Bujold

It’s an interesting point. Changing the ranking criteria or changing the system without holding a qualifier would also be incredibly unfair to those in position to qualify. Either way, if a direct qualifier isn’t held, it doesn’t seem the like a fair process at this point.

Considering that the rankings for Pan American nations are based on results from almost two years ago there are a lot of reasons why we won't get to see the best athletes in our continent compete.

Pretty much, without a qualifier there isn't a fair way to do this. Like if we don't use the rankings the only other options are a) No one goes or b) The IOC/Whoever is in charge of boxing appoints athletes.

TBH it would almost be more fair to have a group of experts award the slots than having a frankly arbitrary ranking do the work.

    • c'mon! stop those idiots! they're trying hard to ruin athletics in almost every aspect (road running, field events, the same cross country that has already been killed in practice)   please, someone shoot to death Coe and his accolades as soon as possible!!!
    • That's only if they don't listen to Trump's 48 hour deadline. But that is permanently 48 hours away, since, well, TACO.
    • I agree NO to Poomsae!!!   I think they plan to introduce 6 weight classes after LA instead of 8 right now, and those 6 should become Olympic instead of current 4 weights. Going forward world and Olympic ranking could be identical.    But it’s not clear if that means more quotas. Having 6 classes with 64 athletes per gender would be a joke. A reasonable taekwondo competition needs at least 16 athletes per weightclass. But I am not sure taekwondo can get another 64 quotas in total, I doubt it.    beside that I am not happy with the newly proposed weight classes, they give much more focus on light weight athletes, which will be an advantage for Asian countries mainly.    if the proposal is accepted the new weightclasses will be:    Female: 46kg, 51kg, 57kg, 63kg,70kg and +70kg    Male: 54kg, 60kg, 67kg,74kg, 82kg, +82kg
