Slalom Canoeing ECA European Championships 2021

Why are there almost twice as many quota places in kayak?

Also this again shows how absurd (and bad for the athletes) the IOC‘s policies are. In some sports a gazillion athletes from the same nation can qualify in the same event, but in other sports not even two athletes from the same nation can qualify. They should just allow 2 or 3 athletes from the same nation in every sport and if they have to reduce the number of athletes, they should do it by reducing the number of teams and/or nobody’s from third-world countries. Even if they would only get rid of football, there would easily be enough spots for all competitive athletes in all the other sports.

When you think about it, an Olympic gold actually isn’t as difficult to achieve in many sports as a world championship gold. In canoe slalom it definitely is easier to win Olympic gold (if we are talking about one specific year, obviously world championships take place more frequently and therefore there are more chances to win world championship gold).

Yes.

Are there any men who are competitive in both events? If not, then isn’t that in itself proof that the women’s events are less competitive and that therefore men’s events should have more quota places?

Not anymore. There were few of them in the past, but nowadays it is impossible to be equally competitive in both C and K.

W C1 is still a terrible joke which does not belong to the Olympics. Removing a great discipline like the C2 to replace it by this nonsense was just shameful decision.

And yes that stupid 1 boat per NOC rule is extremely bad and yes definitely winning the European Championships and World Championships is much much much more difficult than winning Olympic gold. This sadly apply for many other sports as well.

In fighting sports it is somewhat understandable that they only allow one athlete per country, but in slalom canoeing it doesn’t make sense. Obviously some might say that this sport isn’t important enough to have more athletes, but then why the hell are nations allowed to have multiple athletes in the same event in sports like triathlon or modern pentathlon?

well, all 3 are good

every one of them will certainly prepare himself responsibly for tokyo. we have a great balanced team in this discipline, all three would deserve to go to the Olympics and none of them would be considered as "tourist", on the contrary, every one of them is a medal adept.

However if you ask my personal impressio, I'm a little sorry for Slafkovsky, I wished him to go to experience the Olympics, he never qualified because of 1 boat per NOC rule, now he was very close and in my opinion he was our biggest chance in Tokyo, but again all of them are good, and whoever will qualify it is by pure merit.

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
