Yes I saw the discussion above, apparently the most knowledgeable people here (definitely not me) were quite clear in Biles being the deserved winner anyway.

We can discuss the other cases, but since 2013 I don't see any other gymnasts coming close to what Biles does.

She had an off day with two falls and a not so great floor exercise. Despite that, she still deserved the title (I guess she was a bit overscored, but in the end wouldn't have made much of a difference). It's not her fault that the system favours difficulty. It's not a great look when a gymnast with a fall wins gold (that also happens frequently in figure skating), but unless FIG changes the code, the win for Biles was fair.

In 2004 there was a problem with the vault table, so the whole event should have been canceled and the final should have been held another day. The problem is that Khorkina fell on vault, then she lost her focus and fell the uneven bars as well, so the problem might have been her lack of mental strength to recover after a problem, and we can't say this is a problem from anyone but herself.

In 2012 Komova had a significant deduction on vault, and she has no one to blame but herself. Douglas is not my favorite gymnast, but she deserved the gold medal.

This must be piss-poor era for gymnastics. AA champion with two falls and it's still deserved

Nah, Billes is just that good under the current code.

Herein lies the problem, the code is ALL that matters. It's like PFF ranking system in the NFL. Today's gymnastics is like robotics, Execution is deemed irrelevant because of the technical score. It's downright crazy and very unenjoyable.

That's been the case since like forever, Chinese system producing robots, now it's spreading everywhere, power gymnastics has killed the artistic part. It's like going by the PFF numbers to see that Alex Smith is #1 ranked QB. Fuck that, I'll have Rodgers or Brady

really? what about Douglas overscored in uneven bars? just compare her score in qualification and team event final (15.333-15.200) with what she took in AA final (15.733). How he managed to improve 0.400 in so small period?

If a gymnast has a late turn during a pirouette in handstand position, this eats up 0.5 from her score. Maybe she performed a late pirouette two times and nailed it in the all around final? I don't know, really, just a wild guess.

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
