Wow, I've seen awful plans being accepted (like getting rid of the possibilty of absolute epic matches since even a 5th set goes to tie breaks now), but this is probably the single worst plan I've ever seen in tennis and one of the worst plans I've seen in the entire world of sports.

Where will the regular David Cup ties during the year be held with that plan? And for which goal? Surely not every important match will be held in one week somewhere in November?

Players wanted this. I heard about this a few years ago, several players complained about the schedule and it looks like the ITF accepted it.

It will be like world team championship. Like in badminton for example or table tennis.

So after losing epic long 5 set battles, we'll also lose one of the main things that make the Davis Cup so good? Being the feeling of really having national teams battle each other, with one team having a home advantage. I guess it will all be some neutral venue now, where people don't care about 17 of the 18 teams...

This is so incredibly disappointing. RIP Davis Cup.

No, the very top 0.0001% of the best players wanted this. For many players, the Davis Cup was their thing, their ultimate goal. Bye to the epicness of 5 sets matches, bye to the crazyness of 5 matches rounds, bye to the small places and their one chance in a life time to host some of the best players in the world, bye to the crowds and fucking bye to history.

And they dare to call this thing 'Davis Cup'

Tennis is fast becomming a souless bilionaires freakshow, so clean, so perfect. Davis Cup was the last thing giving it a bit of life.

Full tennis stadium with everyone dressed in orange, making even mediocre players like Thiemo de Bakker (mostly busy with eating as much fast food as possible instead of training) suddenly rise up and stand and fight, to get close to the kind of levels shown by the mighty Robin Haase.

And that's only for the Netherlands of course, but I'm sure the same kind of thing goes for many more nations. Now it will just be yet another meaningless Hopman Cup or whatever, another random World Tour Finals-like tournament that nobody really seems to care about. I'm putting my money down on having the NextGen Davis Cup as well within a few years. So urban. It's like they are the freaking IOC.

Yeah, and don't you dare dream this new event will be held in some small place. London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, here we come. So edgy.

The thing is that the Davis Cup was really the X factor of the tennis world. The X factor that was badly needed. Congrats, tennis you're the new golf.

Nicklas Kulti and Arnaud Boetsch played the best match of tennis ever in 1996. Period.

We'll see how much players wanted this in the names and line-ups.

But Davis Cup and Fed Cup also were definitely unique. And both ATP and WTA destroyed the competition with putting their calendars. And I agree with De_Gambassi and heywoodu on this point completely.

  • 1 month later...

India and Uzbekistan advanced to World Group play-offs. India struggled a lot, being 0-2 after day 1! But I still cannot imagine how Korea managed to lose to Pakistan. Now they will kick NZ out of Group 1 in September  Korea is hosting so huge chance that Chung is going to play (unless!!! he does really well at USO).

But with all Davis Cup changes, who cares after all :d

    • I remember when I was a child and I was on holiday with my parents in Tunisia, I think in 1999? We were on a trip to the desert near the border with Algeria. The guide said something like that: Algeria is a few minutes from here but we won't go there because there is a war going on there and it's not safe.
    • Netanyahu is bad but unfortunately Hamas helps him maintain power. Every attack they make is a reinforcement of Netanyahu's rhetoric about the country's security, etc. In the fall of 2023, Netanyahu was already losing support and then suddenly a big Hamas attack on a festival near the Gaza Strip. Coincidence? It wouldn`t surprise me at all if Netanyahu knew about the plan for this attack but did nothing so that he would then have the tools to maintain his power. I also remember Ariel Sharon - he was probably even more radical than Netanyahu but he had a brain hemorrhage and fell into a coma.
    • Ah yes, post-colonial bickering never gets too old. Let me grab my popcorn!   Netanyahu is on a personal revenge mission to avenge his brother's death for his entire political life and people still act like they're surprised by his actions
    • MId-1962.  Almost all the Jews were driven out in a few days, even though they had been living there since Classical, pre-Muslim times.   Perhaps our friend could give us details of of any current Algerian plans to welcome them back, restore their property, guarantee their safety etc etc?
    • In what year did Algeria free itself from French influence? 1960, exactly?
    • Or better, perhaps he'd like to tell us what happened to the 140,000 Jews who were living in Algeria in 1960, as against the 200 who live there now?
    • There are still many people of Jewish origin in Central and Eastern Europe who have nothing to do with the state of Israel. What ties does Zelensky have to the state of Israel? Apart from he waś there as president of Ukraine and speaking in the Knesset? Nothing. In the power circles in Moscow there were/are many people of Jewish origin and what about that? A large part of the power apparatus of the USSR was based on Jews, especially in the years shortly after WWII.   Instead of constantly writing about Jews, would be better to tell me which country Algeria has better diplomatic relations with: Tunisia or Egypt?
    • Handy guide for the perplexed.
    • I`m a bit disappointed with the starts of the Italian team. I was counting on progress from last year. And here it looks like Bagnis is still very uneven. In Cortina there will be 3 competitions with medals to win and it would be a shame not to use our track to win 1-2 medals. The same goes for luge.
    • On the other hand Errani's serve doesn't make Paolini's task any easier... But Paolini is in a such good shape here, though, that I hope she wins her first title in the old Fed Cup. For Errani, it will be 4: 2009, 2010, 2013. So far, Roberta Vinci has 4 titles with Italy.
